Vintners Place - Roof Terrace

OVERVIEW

Size: 1,000 sq.m

Substrate: Asphalt, Wecryl 122, Wecryl 230/ 230 thix

WestWood products: Wecryl 122, Wecryl 230/230 Thix and high performance 700kPa extruded polystyrene and filter membrane.

The Challenge

Facing the river Thames, Vintners Place is a striking neo-classical office building that needed upgrading to attract and retain occupiers. As part of the Category A office fit out on levels five and six, a large roof terrace needed refurbishment. As the original asphalt was nearing the end of its design life, a new inverted roof system was required.

The Solution

Prior to waterproofing, the inverted roof build-up was stripped back to expose the asphalt. As extensive dirt and grime had accumulated over the years, the surface had to be scabbled and cleaned to create a suitable substrate.

WestWood supplied a new inverted roof system, including its Wecryl waterproofing products. The existing asphalt was primed followed by the installation of Wecryl 230, a fleece-reinforced PMMA-based waterproofing resin. To accommodate new planters and a filtration layer, extruded polystyrene insulation with a high compression strength was incorporated into the build-up.

Around the roof terrace’s perimeter were several raised plinths that had been used to secure the window cleaning cradle track and were retained as features. The track and lead saddles were removed, allowing the plinths to be encapsulated with the thixotropic version of Wecryl 230 before decorative cappings and planters were installed.

All paint was abraded and metallic surfaces were primed. A new waterproof collar was installed to circa 100 balustrades, with the covers lifted and repaired using WestWood’s rapid curing PMMA putty.

The terrace was completed with new paving installed on top of adjustable pedestals allowing for levelling and suitable drainage.

The Outcome

The project transformed the roof terrace, providing an impressive communal space that can be enjoyed by occupiers and directly accessed from level six.

The Wecryl 230 waterproofing ensured a flexible, robust membrane that integrated seamlessly with the inverted warm roof design providing long-term protection beneath the insulation layer.
