Morriss House Student Accommodation, Nottingham

OVERVIEW

THE BRIEF

Innovative outdoor space

Morriss House, a modern student accommodation complex located in the heart of Nottingham, is a prime example of how innovative design can enhance both the functionality and aesthetics of urban spaces. Designed by Weddle Landscape Architects, this contemporary development boasts impressive features that cater to the needs of students, offering outdoor spaces for socializing, relaxation, and environmental sustainability.

Langley Design worked closely with RG Group and Weddle Landscape Architects to understand the specific needs of the project and translate those requirements into bespoke solutions that complement the architectural vision and create a welcoming environment for residents. In collaboration with RG Group, we delivered a variety of high-quality, custom-designed elements that would seamlessly integrate into the landscaping of the site.

WHAT WE DID

Bespoke canopy – a standout feature

  • bespoke Sedum Roof Curved Canopy provides shelter while promoting sustainability. The sedum roof contributes to environmental benefits, such as reducing rainwater runoff and improving air quality. The canopy itself was expertly designed and fabricated to integrate perfectly with the surrounding landscape, offering students a shaded, comfortable outdoor space to enjoy throughout the year.
  • Tensile Canopy was installed over the outdoor cinema to create additional shaded areas and encourage outdoor activity. These canopies are lightweight yet robust, offering protection from the elements while maintaining an open, airy feel.
  • Steel Planters were chosen to enhance the aesthetic appeal of the development. These planters provide opportunities for greenery, improving the visual appeal of the outdoor areas while helping to improve the urban environment. The robust, custom-made planters offer both durability and style, creating a seamless transition between the built and natural environments.
  • Picnic Tables and Benches were installed to create inviting spaces for students to relax, socialize, or enjoy meals outdoors. Designed for comfort and durability, they provide functional and attractive solutions for the communal spaces. The combination of timber and galvanised and powder coated steel gives a modern twist on a contemporary piece of furniture. Bright colours are also available to give it that extra spark!

THE RESULT

A sustainable and adaptable space

Throughout the project, Langley Design worked closely with RG Group, the main contractor, and Weddle Landscape Architects, ensuring that the street furniture was delivered on time, within budget, and to the highest standards. Effective communication and collaboration were key to achieving the project’s goals, ensuring that the street furniture elements were installed seamlessly alongside the other landscaping features.

The result is a collection of beautifully designed and highly functional street furniture that both complemented and enhanced the vision for Morriss House, and supports the well-being and social life of students. The bespoke street furniture elements – from the sedum roof curved canopy to the picnic tables and benches – not only enhance the building’s architectural appeal but also contribute to the creation of sustainable, adaptable, and welcoming outdoor spaces.

Langley Design’s attention to detail and commitment to quality have played a crucial role in bringing the vision of Weddle Landscape Architects to life. By providing bespoke solutions that meet the needs of students and the local environment, Langley Design has contributed to the success of Morriss House as a forward-thinking, student-friendly development.

By bringing together design excellence, environmental sustainability, and high-quality craftsmanship, Langley Design has helped elevate Morriss House into an outstanding example of modern student accommodation.
