Project Overview
In the summer of 2024, the Bristol Zoo Project unveiled the Explorers Basecamp, a state-of-the-art, conservation-themed adventure play area designed to engage children of all ages in immersive, educational play experiences. This initiative reflects the zoo's commitment to conservation education and providing interactive learning environments for its visitors.
Design and Features
The Explorers Basecamp is a bespoke, multi-level play space inspired by field stations found at conservation project sites worldwide. The three-storey play tower incorporates various interactive elements, including slides, rope jungles, climbing walls, floor trampolines, a racing zip line, and a sensory area with a hammock. Each level of the structure is designed with a distinct conservation theme, aiming to educate children about protecting species and habitats through play.
Accessibility and Inclusivity
A key aspect of the Explorers Basecamp is its focus on accessibility. The first level is wheelchair accessible and includes games and a slide that can be transferred to from a wheelchair. Additionally, there is a wheelchair-accessible roundabout, ensuring that children of all abilities can participate in the play experience.
Project Development
The project was developed with a focus on sustainability, inclusivity, and authenticity, aligning with the zoo's mission to inspire and educate young minds about conservation.
