OVERVIEW
The development of the Marina Centre in Great Yarmouth was part of a regeneration project along the Great Yarmouth Golden Mile, to support the year-round engagement with the area, the local community, boost the economy and support the health and wellbeing of the borough.
Saunders Boston Architects were appointed by Great Yarmouth Borough Council alongside the Main Contractor Morgan Sindall to complete the architectural and interior design for this landmark project replacing the previous leisure centre build in the 1980s and demolished in 2020.
Work began on the new health and fitness centre in January 2020, comprising of a 25-metre swimming pool, along with a learner pool with moveable floor, leisure pool with fun play features, a water confidence area and two water flumes.
Due to location, close to the sea and subject to assault by salt water, high winds and sand, the new building required a particularly resilient panel specification. Valcan VitraDual was the chosen product for the new Leisure Centre.
Valcan VitraDual is a versatile cladding system that not only meets A1 fire rating standards for safety but also offers exceptional durability, impact resistance, and weather resistance. The client specified this non-combustible cladding system to ensure the building's safety while also prioritising longevity and performance.
A2O Facades expertly installed and fabricated onsite, VitraDual panels 4150 Gold Metallic and 7490 Chromatic Ocean Blue panels were chosen for the building's façade to reflect the sandy beaches and sea along the East Coastal Line. This design not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the building but also creates a visual connection to the surrounding environment, adding a unique touch to the overall design.
As a result of these design choices and the use of high-quality materials, the marina has become known as the "Jewel in the Crown" of Great Yarmouth's Golden Mile, further solidifying its reputation as a standout architectural project in the area.
