Hybrid Cycle Shelter & Bin Store at Southmead Hospital

OVERVIEW

THE BRIEF

Hybrid bin and cycle shelter – flexible design solution

Southmead Hospital, located in North Bristol, is one of the region’s largest healthcare facilities. The Brunel building is one of the most advanced and progressive hospitals in the NHS.

A commitment to sustainability and a welcoming landscape were at the core of the design vision for the hospital’s new development.

Langley Design collaborated with EvaBuild and BDP to design and install a bespoke sedum roof cycle shelter that promotes biodiversity and reduces rain water runoff, while providing dedicated cycle parking for staff and a secure bin storage facility.

Our flexible design capabilities allowed us to effortlessly create a shelter where the bin storage area was fully secure whereas the cycle shelter was open-sided allowing easy and unlimited access to cycle parking for users.

WHAT WE DID

Optimising space and enhancing functionality

The large, steel frame Sheldon Cycle Shelter was galvanised and powder coated in RAL7043 and offers outstanding all-weather protection.

The sedum roof, which spans the length of the entire shelter, promotes biodiversity which supports the project’s sustainability aims.

Designed for convenience, the open-sided cycle shelter offers plenty of parking. It can accommodate 24 bicycles on semi vertical cycle racks catering for the growing number of individuals opting for cycling as a sustainable and healthy means of transport. The expanded capacity ensures that there are ample spaces for cyclists, reducing the inconvenience of overcrowding.

The bin storage facility was designed as a lockable mesh panel enclosure with double gates to provide secure storage for 5 euro bins.

The mesh design provides a visually appealing solution for the bin storage and good ventilation and better airflow for the waste storage areas.

THE RESULT

Well-designed shelter that promotes biodiversity

The new cycle parking facility at Southmead Hospital reflects a strong commitment to sustainability, convenience and promoting healthier lifestyles.

By offering accessible and well-designed cycle parking spaces, the hospital supports staff who choose sustainable transport while actively reducing its environmental impact.

Langley Design’s expertise in bespoke and flexible shelter solutions enabled the seamless integration of cycle parking and well-ventilated and secure bin storage, balancing aesthetics with functionality.

The Client, Architect and Contractor were delighted with the outcome having achieved an environmentally conscious, practical and visually appealing addition to the hospitals infrastructure. The solution not only meets operational needs but also contributes to the hospital’s ongoing sustainability efforts.
