The Old Vicarage, Penrhos, Usk

OVERVIEW

The Old Vicarage, an ‘orange beacon’ is a local landmark set in the countryside of Usk, Monmouthshire. Designed in 1867 by Welsh architect, George Mair, this Victorian vicarage is neighboured by its traditional garden. There are wildlife areas, a meadow, ponds and beautiful views that can be admired from an array of benches.

KEIM Mineral Paints were contacted by the owner as they required a solution that has similar properties to limewash and colour matched to the existing paint. Nicola Young, KEIM’s Senior Colourist, visited the manor house as the owner requested a colour match to the deepest and brightest of the colours evident in the limewash.

All mould and fungal growth were thoroughly removed by pressure washing and a stiff brush (steam cleaning where possible). Once the prepared surfaces had dried, they were uniformly soaked with undiluted KEIM Algicid-Plus. Once the product had been allowed to act for at least 24 hours, KEIM Granital was applied onto the cleaned surface.

A three-coat system of KEIM Granital in a bespoke colour, KS01 0593, was applied onto the previously limewashed lime render to create a uniform, breathable finish that will not require further decoration for 10-15 years, if not longer. We recommend periodically washing painted surfaces with clean, cold water and mild detergent to prevent a build up of dust or dirt.
