Project Overview

In July 2024, Timberplay showcased its innovative concrete-free foundation climbing structure at the Timber Festival, an event celebrating forests and nature. This temporary installation demonstrated Timberplay's commitment to sustainable play solutions and provided festival attendees with an engaging play experience.

Design and Features

The climbing structure, crafted from natural, robust timber, was designed to integrate seamlessly into the forest environment. Its non-prescriptive design encouraged children to engage in various activities such as climbing, balancing, and creative movement, promoting physical development and imaginative play.

Concrete-Free Foundation

A notable aspect of this installation was its concrete-free foundation. By utilizing the natural soil on-site combined with recycled aggregate, the structure eliminated the need for traditional concrete foundations. This approach reduced environmental impact and allowed for easier installation, maintenance, and relocation, aligning with Timberplay's sustainability goals.

Community Engagement at Timber Festival

The Timber Festival, organized by Wild Rumpus, served as an ideal platform to introduce this eco-friendly play structure. The festival's focus on nature and sustainability resonated with Timberplay's mission, and attendees, including children and adults, actively engaged with the climbing structure, experiencing firsthand the benefits of sustainable play design.

Post-Festival Deployment

After the festival, the climbing structure was relocated to The Patch UK, a family-run farm park in Buckinghamshire. This move exemplified the structure's versatility and the advantages of concrete-free foundations, allowing for temporary installations that can be easily dismantled and reassembled in new locations.

Timberplay's temporary installation at the Timber Festival highlighted the potential of sustainable design in play environments.
