Vandersanden launches New RIBA Certified CPD: Carbon Negative Brick Solutions

OVERVIEW

Brick manufacturer Vandersanden is introducing a new RIBA certified CPD, Carbon Negative Brick Solutions, which is now available to architects and construction professionals. This essential new training tool, designed to educate specifiers on this innovative new product, is part of Vandersanden’s wide portfolio of CPD content. It comes under the RIBA core curriculum topics of ‘Design, Construction and Technology’ and ‘Sustainable Architecture’.

Carbon Negative Bricks are a recent innovation developed to offer a sustainable solution which reflects the wider industry demand for environmentally-friendly building products. The informative CPD offers specifiers an introduction to this pioneering new product and explores the key benefits, manufacturing process and the wide range of design options.

Mathew Davies, National Specification Manager for Vandersanden comments; “It is essential for architects and specifiers to engage in on-going learning on the very latest sustainable building materials, to keep up to date on the latest innovations in the market. Following the launch of our game-changing new brick Pirrouet® and our extensive learnings from developing it, we felt the time was right to create an educational and practical new CPD that shares our expertise and briefs specifiers on carbon negative brick solutions.”

The in-depth CPD covers the following learning components:

  •  A brief introduction to clay brick – which offers an overview of the benefits of choosing a clay brick and summarises the key advantages of choosing brick, such as durability, resistance to frost, a low-maintenance finish and being reusable or recyclable.
  •  Brick manufacture and sustainability – this section covers the progress the brick industry has made in developing more energy-efficient production processes and improved environmental management systems.
  •  Carbon negative bricks – this section explains more about this revolutionary development in brick manufacture. It includes a detailed look at the manufacturing process which utilises carbonation, and explores key facts about the production methods. It also outlines the sustainability benefits of carbon negative bricks.
  • Design and aesthetics – this part of the CPD explores the wide variety of design options and choice in carbon negative bricks; from the different sizes and formats available to the inspiring colour spectrum, ensuring there is an option for every type of project.
  • Circularity and the Provisional Environmental Profile for carbon negative bricks – this highlights important industry standards for specifiers such as the life cycle assessment and EPD.
  •  Design, Construction and Post Construction – this section explores a wide variety of technical considerations; including construction, stability and movement, joint provision and also shares health and safety best practice and post construction maintenance.
  • Case studies – the CPD concludes with some inspiring examples of innovative buildings in which carbon negative bricks have been specified, illustrating the vast range of possibilities for architects.

Mathew Davies comments: “We hope that by sharing Vandersanden’s expertise on the subject of carbon negative bricks, we will help contribute to the collective journey of the construction industry, towards a more sustainable and resilient built environment.”

Vandersanden recently launched Pirrouet®, a new carbon negative brick, a groundbreaking innovation which is part of Vandersanden’s Together to Zero roadmap, which reinforces the brand’s movement toward CO2 neutrality by 2050. One tonne of Pirrouet® facing bricks absorbs up to 60 kg of CO2 during the curing process and throughout its lifespan, making the product a first in the construction industry.
