The power of a good student council has helped to shape six new outdoor areas at Denton Community College.Students at the secondary school in Greater Manchester highlighted the need for sheltered outdoor spaces for recreation, dining and for more comfortable journeys around the buildings.Working for Robertson Facilities Management, which looks after the school, Broxap was contracted to complete six installations.To keep disruption to a minimum, works on site began in July 2022, as soon as Denton Community College had closed for the end of term.Prior to that, our team had been preparing behind the scenes to ensure the design and manufacture stages were complete so the installation could go ahead without delay throughout the school holidays.The project included the survey, design, manufacture and installation of two twin conic tensile canopies; a triple conic tensile canopy; two bespoke link walkway tensile canopies and a bespoke access tensile canopy.The early works were of particular importance as the triple conic canopy and two walkway canopies were situated within a central courtyard.This required specialist plant to be moved into the space to accommodate all of Broxap’s installation processes.Thanks to the fact design works were completed in May and June, manufacturing began on time and the delivery and installation phases maximised the available time frames by working in partnership with other contractors on site.All six canopies were completed by the end of August, and students returned to school in September to three covered dining, study and recreation areas, as well as two covered walkways across the courtyard and a bespoke L-shaped entrance canopy over an inclusive access point to one of the buildings.

Having previously soucred playground equipment through Broxap, Djanogly Strelley Academy turned to us once again when they required a shaded outdoor play area. They subsequently chose a set of colourful shade sails suspended above an eye-catching surface.Playground surfacing can do wonders to inspire pupils in their imaginative play whilst also keeping them safer.Broxap produced this soft play area (approx. 120 square metres) using green wet pour with a diagonal style river of blue wet pour cutting through the middle.This was complemented by the install of a series bespoke canopies.The final display consists of FSC® (FSC-C122338) timber columns with fixings for a series of different coloured shade sails. Chain work suspends the sails between the columns to make a striking and colourful covered area.Interested in your own colourful shade sails? A fantastic series of playground equipment and a sensory area have been installed by Hand Made Places at First Steps Day Nursery.The nursery provides care for the children of staff employed by Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.The trust has invested more than £100,000 in the facility at the St Peter’s site in Chertsey, Surrey.At the heart of the play area is a Balksbury Play Unit. Perfect for little ones aged three and above, the activity centre includes a slide and fireman’s pole.Youngsters are challenged to cross the unit using a balance beam, climbing wall, scramble net and bridge, with a ladder and ramp leading to various platforms.To capture imaginations, Activity Panels, including a Chalk Board, Mirrors and a Finger Maze, line the perimeter of the playground along with a Minibeast HQ to encourage children to learn more about the natural world.A Totem garden, with six handcrafted themed posts, adds to the sensory experience at the nursery, while a Caversham Gazebo provides cooling shade as well as shelter from the elements.Staff at First Steps want children to enjoy a wide range of activities in the outdoors, with a corner of the play area dedicated to lessons and story time.This includes the beautiful Hand Made Places Storyteller’s Chair surrounded by a series of Button Stools engraved with different insects.Messy play is also encouraged with the inclusion of an extra-large Sand Pit and a bespoke water play table complete with Ocean Water Chute.The nursery, which is registered for 81 childcare places, continued the nature theme with a custom-made timber planter built into the layout.Hand Made Places was selected by the Trust to work with them designing the play area around the needs of the nursery. Products were manufactured to order at our North Staffordshire timber workshop. Our teams also looked after the removal of existing kit, the installation of the new play equipment as well as ground works and resurfacing, with bound rubber mulch and artificial grass complementing the different zones.James Thomas, Chief Operating Officer at Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals (ASPH) NHS Foundation Trust, said: “The nurseries play a vital role in supporting our staff who support our patients, which makes ASPH a great place to work! The playground really does make a real difference for our staff’s children who will enjoy the new play equipment for many years to come.”

A splash of colour has brightened up a new pedestrianisation scheme employing a variety of orange bollards from Broxap Street Furniture.

Working with Hill Partnerships Ltd the award winning House Builder, Broxap were asked to supply a series of cycle shelters that would suit the aesthetic look of the surrounding apartments/homes whilst also adding an environmentally ‘green’ aspect via sedum roofs; designed to offer a greener view from the apartment windows whilst also serving to capture rain water and absorb (the sedum plants absorbing the rainwater and using it to flourish) it rather than shedding it at ground level and ‘overloading’ concrete areas and grids/sewers with excessive water.

Broxap won the contract to provide an external works package for this project.This allowed Broxap to work on a prestigious new academy alongside Keir Construction, appointed by Cambridgeshire County Council.This external works package was quite extensive and featured a series of Coventry Gullwing-style cycle shelters with Harrogate stands beneath.As well as these cycle parking solutions, Broxap also provided a series of door barriers across the school site and Whitwell and Roslin benches.The school is set to support a new major housing development as the first education development on the site.Significantly, this scheme will provide education for 420 primary school age children plus 52 pre-school age children.The intention is that the school’s construction takes place at the same time as remaining development (David Wilson Homes). Fortunately, Broxap’s expert team provided these products with their usual punctuality and no-hassle approach.The permanent infrastructure will be in place prior to construction works; this will enable safe, permanent access to and from the school site.

The redevelopment of a college campus has included Blox shelters for cycle parking.

Children and adults can enjoy a workout together thanks to the innovative design of an outside gym installed at Hadley park.Sunshine Gym worked with residents, parish councillors, the local authority and outside play consultants to develop the open space.Thought to be the first of its type in the UK, the public outdoor gym equipment features separate areas for children and adults.But with the two sides facing each other, all age groups are encouraged to get fit in the outdoors together as the equipment is mirrored in both gyms.Safety factors considered by Sunshine Gym included the location of the children’s equipment so adults can supervise while taking advantage of the health park themselves.A fence also surrounds the children’s area so that it is safely enclosed. Playground markings mean youngsters can take part in additional games and activities as well as make use of the multi gym fitness equipment.On the opposite side, equipment for adults and young people include a rower, double health walker and double slalom skier alongside a sky stepper to get the heart pumping with cardiovascular routines.Parallel rails, double squat push and Sunshine Gym’s combi pull down challenger and power push offer a strength workout, coupled with an accessible arm and pedal bike suitable for wheelchair users and those who may have difficulties with mobility.In between the sections, a sprint track was marked out.Councillor Derek White, chairman of the health scrutiny committee at Telford and Wrekin Council, said: “The community decided they wanted something that was a bit different, something that was healthy and that the community could engage with.“They thought it was important to provide for adults and young people, but also for children as well.”The park is being maintained by Hadley and Leegomery Parish Council, which held public consultations over the park design with development consultancy apT, part of Telford and Wrekin Council.  Hadley and Leegomery Parish Council chairman Malcolm Smith said: “The new gym has increased awareness of the park to the local community and has already become a popular community venue which the community value.“The park is now used as a community meeting point to meet old friends and new, and exercise together.“Being in the outside this healthy park aims to connect people to nature where they may unwind in the park and exercise for free to maximise the free health benefits on their doorstep and positively impact upon the community.”Bespoke seating and signage, designed, built and installed by Sunshine Gym, completed the near-£40,000 health park project.Councillor Hilda Rhodes, Telford and Wrekin Council’s cabinet member for parks, green spaces and the natural environment, said: “The gym facility has transformed an underused open space into a well-used healthy park.“This provides opportunities to exercise and for quiet contemplation to support mental health and has become a park with a purpose.”

A Newcastle canopy provides an outdoor learning area and a covered play space at Hyde Park School in Plymouth.The double-sided gullwing version of the popular Newcastle canopy was the perfect choice for this project, providing a covered space extending from existing school buildings out into the playground.Outdoor learning space is playing an increasingly important role at the school which is creating an environment to meet the developmental needs of all students.The Newcastle Gullwing canopy was customised by Broxap to fit the space available, following the profile of the existing building, and to meet the needs of Hyde Park School which is now part of the Learning Academies Trust.As well as being manufactured to unique dimensions, we also offered the school a range of customisation options which are available with our canopy and shelter products.It specified a powder coated finish to the galvanised steel framework, choosing blue to match the school colours.
