Keim Soldalit Technical Data Sheet

Keim Soldalit Technical Data Sheet

Keim Mineral Paints Ltd

KEIM Soldalit is a highly specialised mineral paint system based on a binding agent combination of silica sol and potassium silicate, for use on exterior surfaces. This combination allows the application of mineral coatings not only on mineral, but also on a variety of previously painted surfaces directly without the use of any stabilising agents. Offers water repellency, vapour permeability and forms a chemical crystalline bond with the substrate. KEIM Soldalit is made using pure inorganic mineral fillers, earth oxide colour pigments, potassium silicate and silica sol binders. For all mineral, absorbent surfaces, in particular suitable for restoration coatings on repaired and stripped surfaces, suitable for application onto previously painted surfaces.

Lasur Finishes & Colourwashes

Lasur Finishes & Colourwashes

Keim Mineral Paints Ltd

KEIM Lasur finishes are translucent colourwashes which have been developed for application onto mineral surfaces. KEIM Lasurs are used to produce finishes that create a decorative, unifying effect but retain the look and feel of a natural surface and most importantly do not appear painted. Like all mineral paints, KEIM Lasurs have a potassium silicate binder which penetrates into the mineral surface and chemically bonds to it. One of the features of this potassium binder is that it is itself protective and therefore the proportion of this clear binder can be increased, almost without limitation, to create a colourwash whilst at the same time providing the same long term performance and surface protection expected with a mineral paint coating.

Lime Render & Why Buildings Need to Breathe

Lime Render & Why Buildings Need to Breathe

Keim Mineral Paints Ltd

It is important that materials used for repair and redecoration are suitable for use on older, traditional buildings. Hard cement renders and many masonry paints do not allow the moisture that is continually being absorbed into the building to evaporate easily. This can result in damp, cold walls, condensation, flaking paint, rotten joints and other timber fittings, increased heating bills and dampness on the internal walls.

Listed & Historic Buildings

Keim Mineral Paints Ltd

Listed buildings have special architectural or historic interest and are recorded in statutory list. English Heritage are responsible for the administration of the listing system in England, CADW in Wales, Historic Scotland and the Northern Ireland Environment Agency. Conventional acrylic paints merely coat the surface and create a film around the substrate. This film forming coating does not allow moisture vapour to breathe through it, which can result in the formation of blisters which may lead to cracking and flaking paint finishes. If moisture vapour is unable to pass through the surface, this can lead to elevated moisture levels within the substrate eventually leading to friability and damage.

Photocatalytic Difference - Keim Soldalit-ME & Keim Ecosil-ME

In terms of the paint industry, the effects on air pollution should be considered from the manufacture of the materials i.e. the impact of the production process itself, through to the resultant affects of material application i.e. the release of VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds). In the presence of Nitrogen Oxides, it is VOC s which, in addition to being respiratory irritants and strong smelling, result in the formation of harmful ground level ozone. The photocatalytic reaction converts Nitrogen Oxides and other harmful pollutants into harmless nitrates. The reaction helps to breakdown organic material and contamination's, keeping surfaces cleaner. Photocatalytic mineral paints use light energy to neutralise pollution.

Pre-treatment

Pre-treatment

Keim Mineral Paints Ltd

When decorating surfaces, effective pre-treatment will significantly extend the longevity and protection of the painted system. This is particularly important when redecorating previously painted surfaces. This brochure covers paint removal, anti-fungal treatment, cleaning treatments, surface consolidation, filler & repair materials, primers and standard pre-treatment recommendations.

Technical Digest - Algae & Fungal Resistance of Mineral Paints

Keim Mineral Paints Ltd

Algal and mould growth, including fungi and lichens, are an increasing problem in the UK on both the outside and inside of buildings, particularly on painted surfaces. For some buildings and areas the problem can be prolific, often due to a combination of environmental conditions and type of paint coatings. This is both aesthetically unappealing as well as potentially harmful, particularly indoors. There is much research and many opinions about the causes of, and treatments for, such issues, and the following is the opinion of Keim Mineral Paints.

Technical Digest - Breathability & Mositure Movement (Staining)

Keim Mineral Paints Ltd

Keim Mineral Paint systems are highly breathable and allow free passage of moisture vapour through the substrate and paint coating. Where buildings have previously been decorated using unsuitable, acrylic based coatings which do not allow moisture vapour movement, it is likely that there will have been a build up of moisture within the substrate, resulting in high levels of saturation and/or blistering and flaking paint coatings.

When the term breathability is referred to with reference to building materials it is not concerned with air, but with water in both liquid and gas form. Breathability tends to be used to describe the passage of water vapour and there are a variety of related terms that are used to quantify breathability. Water affects everything in building from the health or decay of building fabric, through to the thermal performance of the building and to the health of occupants. Particularly as we try to increase the air-tightness, thermal performance and indoor air quality of our buildings, breathability has become a critical issue, affecting all areas both of new build and of renovation

Technical Digest - BREEAM Certification & Keim Mineral Paints

Keim Mineral Paints Ltd

BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Methodology), first published by the Building Research Establishment (BRE) in 1990, is the world's longest established method of assessing, rating, and certifying the sustainability of buildings. The BREEAM rating is not directly applicable to Keim Mineral Paints and treatment products as they are less than 150microns in thickness which, when applied to substrates, will not significantly affect the environmental rating of the building. All Keim Mineral Paints have VOC contents below 140gms/l, and are therefore, on this basis, BREEAM compatible.

Technical Digest - Cleanliness & Durability

Technical Digest - Cleanliness & Durability

Keim Mineral Paints Ltd

Once a surface has been painted, the type of paint material which has been used can contribute to keeping the surfaces looking clean and bright, or result in a premature build-up of dirt and dust, resulting in frequent cleaning and redecorating. The tendency of coated surfaces to become soiled is influenced, apart from by condensation behaviour, by the static charging characteristics and thermoplastic properties of the binder. The organic synthetic resin/silicone resin binders in conventional acrylic film forming masonry paints become electrostatically charged in the wind due to friction and actually attract dirt particles onto themselves from the air. Paints with a water glass binder, such as Keim Mineral Paints are antistatic and non-thermoplastic.

Technical Digest - Concrete & Anti-Carbonation Protection

Keim Mineral Paints Ltd

A major factor in concrete decay is carbonation, caused by Carbon Dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere reducing the alkalinity of concrete. This in turn results in reinforcing steel becoming susceptible to attack by water and oxygen, causing corrosion of the steel and eventually spalling of the concrete. Sulphates from vehicle exhausts and chlorides from de-icing salts also contribute to concrete degradation.

Treatment & Anti-Graffiti

Treatment & Anti-Graffiti

Keim Mineral Paints Ltd

The KEIM range of water repellent and dust suppressant products provide a clear surface treatments for all mineral surfaces. Whether it is protecting the substrate from water penetration or to reduce a dusty appearance, KEIM products provide treatments which are highly moisture vapour permeable and long lasting, with minimal effect to the appearance of the surface itself. Once a KEIM mineral paint coating has been applied it may be necessary to further protect the surfaces, particularly from malicious damage namely graffiti. KEIM offers two anti-graffiti materials, both of which can be applied over any of the KEIM mineral paint coatings, offering different surface finishes and life cycles.
