Agar Grove in Camden has seen more than its fair share of changes throughout its history. Formerly known as St Paul’s Road, the original estate was owned by wealthy lawyer William Agar. Agar became infamous for his opposition to having the Regent’s Canal cut into his land. 

SAV AirMaster Smart Ventilation Units (SVUs), decentralised mechanical ventilation units with heat recovery, have enabled Furze Down School in Winslow, to control indoor air quality (IAQ) efficiently while maintaining the low noise levels required for Special Educational Needs (SEN) facilities.

The mechanical consultants, Hamson BarronSmith (HBS) of Haywards Heath, specified AirMastermechanical ventilation units with heat recovery. To meetthe demanding requirements of BB101, two units wereinstalled in each of the four laboratories and one in eachof the two computer labs and single training room.Installing AirMaster units ensures that while thelaboratory airborne chemicals are efficiently extracted,much of the harmful air pollution from outside is alsofiltered out before it enters the room. The effectivefiltration integrated into the AirMasters provides asafeguarded environment for the students, freeof pollutants.

The International Aviation Academy, Norwich is using SAV Systems’ AirMaster Smart Ventilation Units (SVUs) to ensure good indoor air quality in classrooms, workshops and IT offices.The academy opened in 2016 at Norwich International Airport and is one of the first of Aviation Skills Partnership’s skills academies where pilots, air traffic controllers, aviation engineers, crews and operational staff can study from level 2 to a full degree in professional aviation engineering.

The Scottish climate provides school designers with a challenge: to provide good indoor air quality whilst maintaining thermal comfort and good acoustic design.As such, BB101 (Guidelines on ventilation, thermal comfort and indoor air quality in schools) needed to be applied. Concerned about the risk of draught, themechanical consultant Ramboll, undertook a computation fluid dynamics (CFD) study. The CFD found that a mechanical ventilation with heat recovery was theonly solution able to meet all criteria, whilst managing low external temperatures.Results of the CFD in hand, Ramboll, Glasgow selected 1 x AM 300, 3 x AM 500 and 38 x AM 800 units for the project. AirMasters can supply tempered fresh air from outside at external temperatures below minus 5°C, having been designed for Nordic climates, with supply temperatures of 17°C plus, without causing draughts. By supplying fresh air only to these classrooms, without recirculation of stale air, the goal of maintaining a CO2 level of less than 1,000 ppm can easily be met.

An AirMaster Smart Ventilation Unit (SVU) from SAV Systems has helped to meet several design challenges for a new extension at Southcraig School in Ayrshire. AirMaster was specified by Davie & McCulloch on behalf of South Ayrshire Council.

The University of Leicester was founded in 1921 and gained university status in 1957.Over the years the university has experienced much growth, with 2019 seeing several buildings refurbished on the campus. DGA Consulting Engineers, the project’s M&E consultants, were tasked with finding ventilation solutions for four buildings: Bennet Building, Physics Building, MSB Building and Attenborough Lecture Theatre.A common issue amongst many refurbishment projects is that the existing centralised ventilation system may not fit with the refurbishment plans. The university was also looking to modernise the refurbished buildings, aiming to reduce the reliance on open windows to providefresh air into classrooms. It was agreed that smart mechanical ventilation units (SMV) would be a suitable, and low impact, method of ventilation for these buildings.

SAV’s AirMaster mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR) units have been selectedto provide filtered fresh air for residents at the Manor Grange care home in Edinburgh. AirMasterunits were specified by The Keenan Consultancy for their ability to meet stringent criteriarelating to indoor air quality, comfort, noise levels and aesthetics.

To meet the increasing demand for new residential housing in Mitcham, developer Lotus Trident created Greenside Views, an 89-unit development of one, two and three-bedroom homes, specifically designed to meet the needs of young professionals and families.

In 2021, Middelfart District Heating began work on converting the towns of Strib, Røgle and Vejlby from gas to district heating. To make it more attractive and easy for the consumers, the district heating company made it possible to choose a District Heat-as-a-Service (DHaaS) scheme. This means that instead of paying a large lump sum, residents have their new district heating unit delivered, installed and commissioned - paid through a monthly subscription. This subscription option has contributed to a dramatic increase and interest for new sign-ups. 

It is an established fact that water-side developments attract premium values. When the regeneration of derelict land in Salford came under serious consideration, it was the proximity of the Manchester, Bolton & Bury Canal which proved attractive.

Newly developed to improve efficiency of existing buildings, Pressure Independent Thermostatic Radiator Valves (PI-TRVs) were installed. They ensure an even distribution of flow to all radiators through automatic dynamic balancing.

The development, on top of the 60 high quality Extra Care apartments, contains a bistro, a modern café, a landscaped garden, an activity area and a ‘pamper suite’. 

SAV has a modest building portfolio when compared to local authorities and businesses, such as banks and multi-national retail outlets. You would therefore be forgiven for assuming that managingtheir energy use would be simpler and that there was less energy waste.SAV implemented the myEnergiRaven energy accounting tool across its five offices, collecting the energy consumption data from the utility bills and manually entering this into myEnergiRaven.

Cambridge Investment Partnership (CIP), an equal partnership between Cambridge City Council and award-winning housebuilder The Hill Group embarked on a transformative journey three years ago.Collaborating with SAV, they sought a platform that would effectively monitor energy consumption in their communal heat networks.This case story focuses on their partnership and the unexpected revelations that emerged after implementing the Raven Residential energy monitoring platform in a new build project, Ironworks, Mill Road.
