Manufacturer guidance

Etex Building Performance Limited warrants that our passive fire protection products and component parts, when installed in the building originally designed, built and unaltered in accordance with the conditions and procedures as detailed in UL-EU Certificate No. UL-EU-01220-CPR, this specification document and associated CAD drawings; and any specific technical recommendations made in relation to the above project, shall be durable and free from defects due to faulty manufacturing or factory workmanship.

The system must be installed by a 3rd party accredited fire protection contractor, and where included in the specification, solely with proprietary products and components as supplied by Etex Building Performance Limited.

The scope of this warranty will be dependent on the application and the environment in which the products are being installed.

Specification data - Rigid sheet casing systems

Support

Metal angle 50 x 25 x 0.5 mm.
Fixings: 3.7 x 16 mm shot-fire nails or M4.2 x 12 mm wafer head screws.

Guidance for specification option:

Casings are installed using metal angles fixed to the underside of the top steel flange for I-beams, angles fixed to the soffit for SHS/ RHS/ CHS and PFC beams. Additional metal angle framing is fixed to the substrate to support soffit boards.

Fixings: maximum 300 mm centres, for I-beams.

Manufacturer guidance

For beam widths over 325 mm, use minimum 25 x 25 x 1.2 mm Z-sections at maximum 610 mm centres to support soffit boards, fixed with 3.7 x 16 mm shot-fire nails or M4 x 9.5 mm pan head screws at maximum 300 mm centres.

Insulation

Low density (10–30 kg/m³) glass mineral wool.

Guidance for specification option:

If required for acoustic or thermal performance.

Not required.

Linings

Inner and outer layers: PROMATECT®-250 board thickness determined by section factor (A/V), fire resistance period and limiting steel temperature.
Maximum board length 1250 mm.

Guidance for specification option:

Note that compartmentation is not applicable to this encasement detail.

Manufacturer guidance

  • For double layer encasements joints between layers must be staggered by minimum 530 mm, no cover strips are required to inner layer.
  • Boards can be left untreated or painted; where decorative finish is required, see Colour/ finish below.
  • Board thicknesses over 25 mm are installed as a double layer, board joints between layers staggered by 530 mm minimum.
  • Where more than one layer of board is used in a casing, the thicker layer should be applied first.

Fasteners

Fixing to metal angle: M3.5 CSK Self Tapping Screws.
Fixing to board edge and coverstrips: Chisel point staples minimum 35 x 12 x 1.6 mm (50 x 12 x 1.6 mm for board thicknesses over 15 mm).

Guidance for specification option:

  • Fixing to metal angle: Maximum 200 mm centres. Screw length to provide minimum penetration of 10 mm through the angle.
  • Fixing to board edge and coverstrips: Maximum 150 mm centres. End staples are located nominally 40 mm from the corner of the board.

System accessories

FSi Promat Pyrocoustic® Fire Resistant Sealant.

Guidance for specification option:

All board abutments to surrounding structure to be sealed using PROMAT PROMASEAL® Intumescent Sealant. Designed to seal any slight gaps at interfaces between the boards and the substrate, and which have low movement requirements (±12.5%). Contains no solvents or halogen compounds.

Fire resistance

Guidance for specification option:

Fire resistance (minutes) to EN 13501-2. Insert requirements.

Colour/ Finish

Guidance for specification option:

Insert requirements.

Manufacturer guidance

Decorative finishes should be applied in accordance with Promat Technical Data Sheet TDS 056 (https://www.promat.com/en-gb/construction/documentation/).

Section factor

Maximum 350 m-1.

Steel sections

600 mm deep and 325 mm wide (maximum).

Substrate

-

Manufacturer guidance

For SHS/ RHS/ CHS and PFC beams, where it is not possible to fix to the underside of the flange, metal angle is fixed directly to the concrete soffit with M4 screws into metal plugs, non-combustible concrete anchors or concrete screws (by others) at maximum 300 mm centres.

Fixing length to provide a minimum penetration of 30 mm into the substrate.

Strips

Coverstrips: Thickest encasement board layer x 100 mm wide PROMAT PROMATECT®-250 coverstrips fitted behind board joints and at the start and end of the beam.

Guidance for specification option:

Coverstrips are not required to the bottom flanges of beam encasements.

Third-party certification

As detailed in UL-EU Certificate No. UL-EU-01220a-CPR.

Guidance for specification option:

Depending on site conditions, alternative fixing methods may be required for beams and columns, one- or two-sided exposure or interface with other building elements. These fixing methods are outside the scope of current EN test methods. These recommendations are based on the principles of EN 13381-4 and given in good faith. They should be approved by the responsible designer or through independent third party assessment.

Installation

A nominal 3 mm gap must be left between the edge of the PROMAT PROMATECT®-250 board and the solid wall. This gap must be filled with FSi Promat Pyrocoustic® Fire Resistant Sealant.
