BBA Agrément Certificate
Certificate type
Spray-applied, two-component, polyurethane elastomer structural waterproofing membrane that is pigmented blue.
AlphaGuard Blueshield provides a durable, extremely fast curing and low odour structural waterproofing system suitable for podiums, terraces, balconies and service decks on new build or refurbishment projects.
AlphaGuard Blueshield is a two-component, blue pigmented, polyurethane elastomer waterproofing membrane applied directly to structural concrete. AlphaGuard Blueshield is specified beneath protected roof systems that include external finishes such as paving, ballast or green roofing. Due to a chemically induced cure that is delivered by a combined mechanical spray apparatus, AlphaGuard Blueshield membrane will begin to cure within a few seconds providing an exceptionally fast, seamless, fully adhered barrier against water ingress and other external contaminants.

System performance | Guidance for specification option: AlphaGuard Blueshield systems possess a variety of independently assessed accreditations for performance such as British Board of Agrément, European Technical Assessment and a Broof(t4) fire rating under BS EN 13501-5:2016 fire classification of construction products and building elements.
AlphaGuard Blueshield systems comply with the performance guidelines set out in relevant UK Building Regulations, BS 6229:2018 Flat roofs with continuously supported flexible waterproof coverings, and LRWA codes of practice.
AlphaGuard Blueshield membranes offer exceptional cure time, low odour and high elongation properties ideal for structural waterproofing. |
Preparation | |
Horizontal work | AlphaGuard Blueshield Primer.Guidance for specification option: A single component, polyurethane-based primer, which provides excellent adhesion between the substrate and Blueshield membrane. The primer is applied using a roller, brush or airless sprayer and is suitable for use on concrete, steel and masonry surfaces. Application rate 50—75 g/m². |
Skirtings and vertical work | As horizontal work. |
Liquid-applied waterproofing | |
Type | AlphaGuard Blueshield.Guidance for specification option: An unreinforced, two-component, highly elastic, polyurethane based, spray applied liquid membrane that cures in seconds by a combined chemical cure. AlphaGuard Blueshield has exceptional elongation and crack bridging properties offering a robust structural waterproofing layer that can easily cope with normal levels of structural or thermal movement. AlphaGuard Blueshield is applied by mechanical spray apparatus where each component is simultaneously combined and sprayed at a typical application rate of 2.7 kg/m². |
Insulation | |
Type | Extruded Polystyrene (XPS) Insulation.Guidance for specification option: Commonly specified throughout the industry for applications that require inverted roof insulation that is water repellent, thermally efficient and has high compressive strength.
Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) Insulation.Guidance for specification option:
Manufacturer guidanceInverted roof thermal insulation boards manufactured from either extruded or expanded closed cell polystyrene. |
Fixing | Loose Laid.Guidance for specification option: Insulation boards should be laid out loose in break bond pattern, fully supported, and with all edges closely butted together to ensure thermally continuity. |
Water control layer | Water Flow Reducing Layer.Guidance for specification option: A water flow reducing layer (WFRL) is now standard specification for inverted roof assemblies to provide filtration and enhance thermal efficiency by limiting the passage of cool rainwater through insulation that can reduce U-values. Unroll the WFRL and lay loose perpendicular to the falls on the roof. Subsequent rolls should create an overlap facing down the roof slope to avoid negative laps directing rainwater beneath the WFRL. Material laps at sheet ends or details should be a minimum of 300 mm. |
Ballast | Paved or Ballasted Roof.Guidance for specification option: Concrete pavers are typically 50 mm thick and must achieve a minimum weight of 80 kg/m². Ballast aggregate should be 20—40 mm grade washed stone ballast that is free from fines or sharps and laid a minimum of 50 mm deep. High rise developments may require additional wind load calculations to determine appropriate grade and depth. Extensive or Intensive Green Roof.Guidance for specification option: Install an intensive or extensive green roof system in accordance with the suppliers NBS Q37 specification. The specified system should comprise of a proprietary drainage board, geotextile fleece and appropriate depth of growing medium. Surface species and type are subject to client requirements and/or horticultural assessment. |
System accessories | TremTherm Mineral Wool UB.Guidance for specification option: A dual density rigid mineral wool thermal insulation board that has an integral 6 mm cement fibre facing specified for protected upstand details that require A2 rated fire performance (non-combustible) under BS EN 13501-1 classification. TremDome.Guidance for specification option: A traditional domed style rooflight that includes a thermally broken insulated kerb with excellent natural light transmittance properties. TremDome rooflights come with a variety of ventilation accessories and can be operated manually or electronically. Design is subject to survey or client requirements. TremClip.Guidance for specification option: Lightning protection systems are frequently installed to buildings to avoid damaging and costly lightning strikes. TremClip has a threaded securement base that includes a separate retaining clip to secure lightning conductor tape at predefined centres across the roof. TremFlash.Guidance for specification option: A1 non-combustible secondary cover flashing manufactured from soft and workable zinc alloy. Primarily used as lead substitute in flat roof details such as wall chases or abutment flashing. Ilbruck SP510.Guidance for specification option: General purpose low modulus sealant that is silicone free and cures to form a tack free surface. TremSeal mastic can be used to enhance the waterproofing integrity of a wide variety of detailing situations. AlphaGuard Blueshield UV Top Coat.Guidance for specification option: AlphaGuard BlueShield UV Top Coat is a low solvent, pigmented, single-component, moisture curing, UV and weather resistant top coat that is applied to any exposed AlphaGuard Blueshield details. |
