Description

Anti-Corrosion Protective Coating Systems for the painting of steel to protect against corrosion in C1, C2, C3, C4, C5 basic atmospheric corrosivity environments as per ISO 12944 (ranging from Medium, High and Very High). Select the variant on the drop down for the full system including Primer / Topcoat. If you require an Intumescent System, go to the Hempel Intumescent Fire Protection variants and choose the system you require. If you would like specific information or advice on specifying a system for your project please contact Hempel.

Selecting the correct paint system for protection against corrosion requires a variety of factors to be taken into account to ensure that the most economical and best technical solution is achieved. For each project the most important factors to consider before selecting a protective coating are:

  • Environmental Corrosivity (see table in image 2 above or Hempel ISO 12944 Brochure attached).
  • Type of protected surface - Designing a coating system normally involves dealing with construction materials such as steel, hot dipped galvanized steel, spray-metallised steel, aluminium or stainless steel. The surface preparation, the paint products used (particularly the primer) and the total system thickness will depend mainly on the construction material to be protected.
  • The durability required for a paint system. The lifetime of a paint system is assumed to be the period of time which passes until maintenance is required for the first time after application. ISO 12944 specifies a range of four time frames to categorize durability (see table in image 3 above or Hempel ISO 12944 Brochure attached).
  • Planning the paint application process. The building schedule and the various stages of construction of any particular project determine how and when the paint system needs to be applied. Consideration needs to be given to materials at their prefabrication stage, when components are being prefabricated both off and on-site and when building stages are complete. It is necessary to plan the job so that surface preparation and the drying/curing time of paint products in relation to temperature and humidity are considered. Also if one stage of construction takes place in a protected workshop environment and the next stage then takes place on site, recoating intervals must also be taken into account.

System performance

C2 High (LFTM: 15-25 Years).

Guidance for specification option:

Low corrosivity category (C2) environments requiring high durability (15—25 years estimated life to first major maintenance), such as:

External: Atmospheres contaminated to a small extent, mainly rural regions.

Internal: Buildings which are not heated, where condensation may occur e.g. storage facilities or sports halls.

Hempadur Speed-Dry ZP600: A self-priming, two-component high build epoxy paint containing zinc phosphate.

Hempathane Fast Dry 55750: Recommended as a high-build solution for protecting steel structures, in compliance with VOC regulations.

May be specified as a one-coat direct-to-metal system.

Can also be used as an undercoated intermediate coat or topcoat within the system.

Hempathane HS 55610: This type of polyurethane has a high resistance to chemical leaks and spills. VOC compliant, with good gloss and colour retention.

It is recommended as a topcoat for anticorrosive protection for industrial structures such as refineries, cellulosic plants, mines, exterior of storage tanks as well as in ports and ships.

Preparation

Guidance for specification option:

Blast clean to the cleanliness preparation grade Sa2½ according to ISO 8501-1: 2007 or as per the Product Data Sheet of the primer to be applied. Both metallic and non-metallic abrasives can be used. Grit is recommended. Remove any remaining dust before applying the paint. Surface preparation for most common substrates Carbon Steel, including cast iron and Corten steel Remove oil and grease by fresh water washing with a suitable detergent followed by fresh water rinsing to remove remaining salts and other contamination. Solvent cleaning may also be applied for small areas. All surfaces to be prepared in accordance with the coating manufacturer's written instructions. Consult manufacturer's literature for details.

Initial coats

Hempadur Speed-Dry ZP 600.

Guidance for specification option:

A self-priming, two-component high build epoxy paint containing zinc phosphate.

Finishing coats

Hempathane 55610 (Glossy).

Guidance for specification option:

A one coat Polyurethane topcoat cured with aliphatic isocyanate.

It has a high volume solids and contains zinc phosphate making it suitable for protection of structures in corrosive environments. It can be applied direct to metal.

VOC compliant two-component topcoat, with good gloss and colour retention.

Hempathane Fast Dry 55750 (Semi-Gloss).

Guidance for specification option:

A two-component polyurethane paint, cured with aliphatic isocyanates.

Good gloss retention and colour stability.

Contains zinc phosphate.
