Bauder Flora Seed Mixes Biodiverse Green Roof:

Seeding an extensive green roof can be an economical and practical method of greening very large areas. The five types of Bauder Flora Seed Mixes are specifically designed for sowing at roof level, they contain tackifier and fertilizer with the seed to ensure the seed is stuck to the substrate and not blown or washed off the roof, this ensures the highest germination rates. To meet particular planting requirements on Biodiverse roofs seeding is often combined with plug planting to get an exact species mix.

Bauder are a member of Flora Locale. All the wildflower seed comes from Flora Locale certified collectors allowing us to use their kite mark.

Root barrier

20/ 40 mm rounded river washed pebbles.

Guidance for specification option:

For slopes below 10° only.

A vegetation barrier must be provided to all perimeters, abutments penetrations including protrusions i.e. man-safe posts etc.

Stones/ aggregates with sharp edges must not be used i.e. flint.

In accordance with current GRO guidelines, the specified barrier widths are as follows:

  • Minimum 300 mm but increasing to 500 mm at vertical walls with opening windows or doors or to abutments with opening rooflights.
  • Every 40 m, there is a 30 mm high barrier constructed of non-flammable materials or a one metre wide strip of solid paving, gravel or pebbles.
  • At all open drainage perimeters, drainage trim must be used to contain the vegetation barrier.
  • Vegetation barrier removal or reduction of the recommended width: Pebble vegetation barriers function as a fire break between potentially flammable dry vegetation and abutting construction materials that are also potentially flammable, to prevent fire spreading. These can be seen as an aesthetic issue for smaller green/ blue roof areas and for this reason some clients/ designers choose to reduce this width or otherwise remove the barrier altogether.

The current barrier guidelines are set by the GRO codes of practice that Bauder follows and promotes. These are guidelines and not currently a legal requirement under British Standards or Building Regulations. However, not following these guidelines may affect an insurance claim in the unlikely event of a fire. Consequently, Bauder Ltd cannot accept liability for issues arising from non-compliance with the current GRO guidelines.

Paving slabs.

Guidance for specification option:

For roof slopes 10° upwards, a hard edge should be supplied using paving slabs as an alternative to 20/ 40 mm round river washed pebbles.

Drainage layer

BauderGREEN DSE 40 drainage board.

Guidance for specification option:

PE-HD water storage and multi-directional drainage layer. Used on roofs 0–5° finished falls. Loose laid (open profile cup up) on to the Protection Layer (or WFRL on inverted roofs) over completed waterproofing to provide continuous drainage within hard and soft landscaping. It is primarily used where the load is moderate to high, such as extensive and intensive green roofs. Its compressive strength makes it suitable beneath paving laid on sand/ cement or gravel bedding or within planter beds.

Boards are to be interlocked by a minimum of one profile cup and all board joints staggered. The ‘X’ stamped impression on the highpoint of the cup moulding indicates where boards overlap. Cut to fit closely around penetrations and outlets.

  • Size: 1.04 x 2.03 m (2.1 m²).
  • Nominal wall thickness: 2 mm
  • Depth: 40 mm.
  • Coverage: 2 m² (approximately).
  • Water storage: 13.5 L.
  • Filling capacity: 21 L.
  • Compressive strength: 80 kN/m² empty/ >1000 kN/m² aggregate filled.
  • Weight (saturated): 15.3 kg/m².
  • Material: 100% recycled high-density polyethylene.

The drainage/water storage board also provides a suitable base surface for building concrete or brick kerbs/walls. The specified infill haunching should be installed over the board to the required depth of cover, poured directly into the profile cup of the board. These should be constructed to provide an adequate support for the raised masonry planters.

BauderGREEN WSP 75 / 50 reservoir board.

Guidance for specification option:

Water storage and multi-directional drainage layer. Used on roofs 0–25° finished falls (the only suitable Drainage and Protection layers for slopes 6° upwards). Boards laid over the entire area to provide continuous drainage and increased water capacity for the vegetation.

Loose laid (open cups up) on to the Protection Layer (or WFRL on inverted roofs) over completed waterproofing ensuring that the rebated boards are properly interlocked to provide adequate anchorage prior to the soil being laid. The board cups can be filled with water to provide temporary loading against wind uplift prior to installing the remaining landscaping elements in accordance with the specification. In the event of any confusion concerning this item, Bauder Ltd should be contacted so that advice may be given.

Cut to fit closely around penetrations and outlets.

Roof slopes 6° upwards, a parapet wall or restraint kerb must be provided to support the water storage/ drainage board at the base of the slope. This should be included within the deck construction and reference made within the waterproofing specification also. This in turn will restrain and stabilize the landscaping against imposed shear load forces.

  • Size: 0.795 x 1.298 m (rebates).
  • Depth: 50 mm/ 75 mm.
  • Water storage: 10 L/ 22.1 L.
  • Compressive strength: 25 kN/m²/ 35 kN/m².
  • Weight (saturated): 10.65 kg/m²/ 22.1 kg/m².
  • Material: Expanded polystyrene.

Filter membrane

BauderGREEN FV 125 filter fleece.

Guidance for specification option:

Fine mesh PP geotextile used in conjunction with Bauder substrates. Bauder Filter Fleece is designed to separate and contain Bauder substrates from the drainage element of the green roof system (for slopes 0–5°). It prevents fine material from being washed out of the substrate layer.

Loose laid over the drainage layer. The fleece should be taken up the sides of the substrate between the substrate and drainage trim or pebble margin. Fleece joints should be overlapped 150 mm. Fleece should not be taken over the top of drainage outlets.

Upstands (soft landscaping): Extend up, between vegetation barrier and growing medium and trim flush with finished surface level.

Upstands (Hard landscaping): Extend to top of perimeter abutments and trim flush just below finished surface level.

A filter layer is not used over reservoir board on slopes 6° or above, where the reservoir board is directly filled with substrate growing medium. However, a separate strip of Bauder Filter Fleece must still be used to separate the growing medium from the vegetation barrier at perimeter abutments and around pipe protrusions, outlet inspection chambers etc. dressed up all upstands and around all protrusions to at least flush with the finished surface level. At abutments the Filter Fleece must be used to separate the vegetation/ drainage barrier and substrate growing medium by extending it 500 mm beneath the reservoir board and then bringing it up between these two items.

  • Weight (saturated): 0.125 kg/m².
  • Pore size: 0.13 mm.
  • Thickness: 1 mm.
  • Roll size: 1 x 100 m/ 2 x 100 m.
  • Coverage: 100 m²/ 200 m².
  • Water storage: None.
  • Material: Polypropylene fleece.

Substrate

BauderGREEN SUB-BM UK biodiverse substrate.

Guidance for specification option:

Recycled crushed brick, expanded clay, shale, composted pine bark. Minimum depth 100 mm.

Lightweight, free draining substrates designed as a growing medium for a range of different plant species. This FLL/ GRO compliant substrate provides a free draining, growing medium for biodiverse green roof systems. Additionally, it provides aeration qualities with some inherent water retention.

  • Material: Recycled crushed brick, expanded clay, shale, composted pine bark.
  • Maximum Weight (saturated): ≤1200 kg/m³.
  • Typical supply weight: c. 950 kg/m³.
  • Water storage (by volume): 35%.
  • pH value: 6–8.5.
  • Bulk bag size: 1.25 m³.
  • Small bag size: 25 L.

Normally installed above a Filter Fleece and drainage board product. Substrates are raked out to give an even coverage of the required depth after settlement.

Handle in the driest condition possible. Do not handle or install when wet or frozen.

Start by applying two equal layers, building up to the required maximum depth.

Gently firm each layer before spreading the next. Allowance should be made for any settlement that may occur. It is recommended that ‘measuring stick’ markers of the required depth be used around the roof area to ensure that a minimum acceptable thickness of growing medium is achieved.

Depending on size and access of the project the ‘substrate’ can be supplied by various methods i.e. tipper, silo lorry (pumping directly onto the roof area), Big bags, or sacks. Prior to costing this element of the installation, the ‘Bauder Approved Contractor’ must contact Bauder Ltd so that they may advise on the best solution on any specific contract.

Trellis Substrate restraint (including for all slopes above 16º): Provision must be made by the installing contractor for supplying and fabricating 25 x 50 mm untreated timber formed into a trellis frame that is supported at the base of the slope (resting against the protection layer). The trellis is to form a series of retaining grids 400 mm square and used on all slopes between 16–25º. This trellis will provide initial retention until plant establishment and help prevent soil erosion. It will eventually rot away naturally.

Important note regarding alternative substrates:

Alternative substrates are not recommended for Bauder supplied planting.

Edge restraints

Bauder AL150 Edge and Drainage Trim.

Guidance for specification option:

Perforated edge/ drainage trim used to frame and contain the green roof build-up. AL150 is specifically for use within substrate-based green roofs. AL150 must always be used in conjunction with the pebble vegetation barrier (below 10° only) / or hard edge (such as a paver).

Normally installed directly onto waterproofing, the drainage trims can be welded down using lengths of the waterproofing membrane. The trim is used to frame the green roof build up and should be completed and inspected prior to living material being delivered to site. See Bauder Green Roof Installation Guide for full details

Vegetation

BauderGREEN Plugs native wildflower/sedum.

Guidance for specification option:

For greater biodiversity and interest, Bauder can provide a mix of native wildflowers, herbs and grasses.

Supply and plant a mixture of Bauder supplied British native plug plants in accordance with the landscape designers or ecologists planting schedule and drawings (where provided). All operatives carrying out the vegetation installation should refer to the Bauder installation and establishment guidelines for vegetation plugs, which is available from Bauder Ltd.

  • Supply form: Maximum of 60 trays per pallet
  • Size: 4 cm plugs – 104 per tray/ 5–6 cm plugs – 54 per tray.
  • Coverage: Refer to specification.
  • Saturated weight: Approximately 5 kg per tray.

Planted into the growing medium at a rate of 20 plants/m². The plant coverage rate should be increased to 25 plants/m² in areas subject to wind erosion i.e. corner zones, ridges, perimeters etc.

Bauder Green Roof Technical Team provides a service whereby the type of plants best suited to the building location, height of the roof, slope and orientation are selected. This helps to ensure that the optimum mix is selected and reduces loss of individual species because of incorrect specification.

Plant trays should be lifted to roof level and unpacked immediately, or alternatively may be kept for a maximum of two days in cool covered storage prior to lifting to roof level. Spring and autumn are the most suitable times of year to plant the plugs. It is essential that both the growing medium and the plugs are thoroughly watered both prior to and immediately after installation. Plug plants will need to be kept moist for 10 weeks after installation.

Establishment Watering Requirements:

Surface watering for the first 10 weeks following installation (to ensure the substrate remains moist to the touch). It is the responsibility of the roofing contractor to liaise with the main contractor/ building owner to provide water and ensure that the planted growing medium is thoroughly irrigated immediately after installation.

An adequate mains water supply of sufficient pressure must be available and operational prior to the plants being delivered and installed. Initial watering must be by surface mounted sprinklers. See the Bauder Watering Guide document for detailed information on watering requirements. Bauder Ltd accepts no responsibility whatsoever for the condition of installed planting that is not properly watered or irrigated following landscaping works.

Manufacturer guidance

Fertilizer should ideally be applied during March/ April, as it helps the plants to prepare for extreme weather conditions and flowering whilst also allowing the different species to gain sufficient nutrients without competing against each other.

Organic fertilizer can be obtained direct from Bauder in 25 kg bags, which is sufficient for an area of 312.5 m² when applied at the recommended rate of 80 g/m². Areas of up to 30 m² may be applied using either a handheld spreader or strewn by hand from a bucket. Larger roofs should always be done using a trolley applicator, which can be purchased direct from Bauder. Always apply the fertilizer at the given rate written on the bag.

It is recommended that the fertilizer is lightly ‘watered in’ immediately after application, to avoid “burning” of the foliage, which may occur if fertilizer pellets settle on the leaves. Dung-based organic fertilizers should be avoided.

Biodiversity and habitat creation features

Undulating substrate.

Guidance for specification option:

Away from perimeters and doorways, undulate the substrate between 80–200 mm, dependent on average depth required (minimum depth ≥80 mm).

Stone piles.

Guidance for specification option:

Small areas of clean, assorted stone in 1 m² sized areas made from 20–200 mm diameter stone, (ideally gathered from site) mounded in random piles no more than three stones deep. Approximately one pile for every 50 m² of biodiverse roof. These provide valuable shelter for ground active invertebrates.

Sand Piles.

Guidance for specification option:

Small areas of clean sharp sand or builders’ ballast. Approximately 50–100 mm deep covering areas of 2–3 m², to be left free from planting or seeding. These are to be situated in sunny areas with low substrate depths (80 mm).

One sand pile for every 50 m² of biodiverse roof. These provide basking areas and ground nesting habitat.

Dead Wood Habitat.

Guidance for specification option:

Deadwood piles to be made from British native hardwood species (bark retained), ideally from trees removed locally or in the re-development works. Wood piles to be made from 8–12 number of wood lengths. Wood to be between 100–200 mm diameter and 600–1200 mm in length. 8 to 12 lengths per pile. To be stacked no more than 350 mm high and be secured in areas of high wind. One deadwood pile for every 50 m² of biodiverse roof. These provide rotten wood habitat as they decay in sheltered and shaded areas, as well as nesting habitat.

Dew pools – Wet areas.

Guidance for specification option:

Buglife approved wetland feature. Installed directly over the Bauder Drainage/ Water storage layer. To be buried so that the edges are level with the surface substrates. The plastic pond itself should be filled with substrate which gradually slopes down to form a central hollow where water accumulates. One pool to be positioned for every 100 m² of roof area. Dew pools provide valuable wet, temporary ponds to provide breeding habitat and moist cavities.
