Application

Roofing from 3º pitch to 89º. Flat, curved or double curved.

Description

elZinc® standing seam is a traditional fully supported architectural roofing system composed of site-seamed zinc trays. The seamed joint is very discrete, being only 25 mm high, and the pan of the tray is flat. The standing seam zinc roofing can be used to cover roofs pitched above 3º all the way to the vertical. The zinc trays can be tapered, pre-curved to concave or convex panels, so almost any architectural geometry can be weathered using this system. Slight oil canning (quilting) is sometimes apparent, adding extra character to the zinc roof.

The trays are made of 0.65, 0.7 or 0.8 mm thick elZinc titanium zinc rolled according to EN 988 and ASTM B69-13.

Cladding weight is between 6–7 kg/m². Trays are fixed back to sheathing/ boarding using stainless steel clips secured at pre-determined centres (according to exposure) by stainless steel (A2 grade) fasteners. Sheathing/ boarding to be laid flush and flat, and its fasteners driven just below the surface. For buildings that require a non-combustible substrate for the zinc, trapezoidal metal sheet panels are used as a substitute for the wooden sheathing/ boarding.

The roof either follows a ventilated design or an unventilated (warm) roof design. If ventilated, a space of between 50–100 mm (depending on rafter length) is incorporated under the substrate, and a structural underlay (and draining membrane) is sometimes required under the zinc to ensure air circulation to its underside. Installed in an unventilated (warm) roof design, suitable methods for condensation control are required, and elZinc Protect+ must be used.

Features and benefits:

  • Proven, versatile system for roofing flat, curved and ‘free-form’ roofs.
  • Weather-tight down to 7º of pitch, 3º if seams are sealed.
  • Discrete joints give a light, elegant appearance.
  • Modern profiling and seaming machines facilitate short installation times.
  • On-the-roof detailing uses folding techniques or soldered joints – no mastic.
  • Items such as snow guards and life line attachments are readily available.

Specification data - Zinc sheet fully supported roof covering systems

System performance

Weatherproof roof covering.

Guidance for specification option:

Standing seam zinc trays shall provide a weathertight roof, free draining causing no ponding, able to freely expand and contract in response to temperature changes, and fitted to resist all loading including wind loads. The appearance of the roofing and cladding shall be one composed of flat trays or panels, without excessive oil canning, of straight joints and neat folds, correctly set out according to the architect’s drawings and design intent.

Insulation

-

Manufacturer guidance

Insert requirement. A zinc roof does not place any special requirement on the insulation, unless used as the substrate for the zinc in warm roofs. In this case, the insulation must be stable up to 100ºC, and not compress due to foot traffic or kneeling operatives, so as not to deform the zinc sheets.

Air and vapour control layer

Not required.

VCL with an sd value of 100 m.

Guidance for specification option:

All edges lapped and sealed, and wrapped around edges of insulation, in accordance with membrane manufacturer's instructions.

High performance vapour barrier with an sd value of 1500 m or above.

Guidance for specification option:

All edges lapped and sealed, and wrapped around edges of insulation. Self sealing around any penetrating fasteners.

Manufacturer guidance

Ventilated roofs - a vcl with a minimum sd value of 100 m should be installed under the insulation.

Unventilated roofs using rigid insulation as the substrate - a high performance vapour barrier with an sd value of 1500 m should be fitted under the insulation. This must be self sealing around any fasteners that pentrate it. Foamglas insulation - none required - the insulation acts as the vapour barrier.

Carrier

Softwood battens.

Guidance for specification option:

With suitable wood preservative treatment, height 50 mm minimum or according to ventilating cavity depth. Use softwood battens for open gap boarding.

Metal purlins.

Guidance for specification option:

Use metal purlins for metal decks, insulated metal panels.

Fully supporting deck.

Guidance for specification option:

Use over roof rafters/structure for rigid insulation and foamglas.

Roof rafters for plywood sheathing.

Guidance for specification option:

Roof rafters are normally the carrier for plywood.

Manufacturer guidance

Select carrier (carrier of substrate) from list below, adding any appropriate comments.

Substrate

Sheathing/ boarding.

Guidance for specification option:

Sheathing/ boarding laid flush, true and plumb, and its fasteners driven just below the surface. For buildings that require a non-combustible substrate for the zinc, trapezoidal metal sheet panels are used as a substitute for the wooden sheathing/ boarding.

Ventilated plywood substrate, 18 mm.

Guidance for specification option:

Ventilated galvanized steel metal deck, 0.7 mm minimum.

Guidance for specification option:

To give a minimum clip pull-out value of 560 N, installed 'façade side outwards' to give maximum support to the zinc trays, parallel to eaves, all ends supported.

Unventilated insulated metal panel, outside metal skin, 0.7 mm minimum.

Guidance for specification option:

To give a minimum clip pull-out value of 560N, with seals on the inside face between panels to ensure vapour tightness.

Rigid insulation.

Guidance for specification option:

Stable up to 100ºC, able to resist foot traffic and kneeling operatives without compressing.

Foamglas insulating boards.

Guidance for specification option:

Installed according to manufacturer's instructions, providing a vapour-tight substrate.

Open gap softwood boarding according to EN 12775-2, 18 mm.

Guidance for specification option:

Manufacturer guidance

Select appropriate substrate from list, including any additional requirements. All substrates installed according to substrate manufacturer's guidelines. Other substrate systems are possible - consult zinc manufacturer for further details.

Cavity barriers

Sleeved mineral wool cavity barriers

Guidance for specification option:

Fixing of trays use stainless steel clips at a nominal spacing of 300 mm along the length of the standing seam.

A general spacing of 300 mm is sufficient for most projects. Clip spacing along the edges of the façade and at the corners may require reducing, and buildings located in exposed areas or over 8 m in height, or in regions exposed to tropical storms will require further study – consult our technical documentation.

Execution

Guidance for specification option:

Joints shall set out according to architect’s drawings, or in their absence, according to the design intent of the project. The details of the zinc work should be carried out according recognized good practice and manufacturer’s recommendations. Respect minimum recommended interior radii while bending. Holes should be notched where required to prevent tears forming in the zinc.

Marking out: Use a pencil, pen, crayon or chalk. After completion, no marking should be visible. Wherever possible use a mechanical folder to bend material to give straight and uniform folds.

Free edges: If visible fold over to form a 15 mm hem. Ensure the temperature of the metal does not fall below 7, or 10°C, depending on the operation, when folding, profiling or forming the metal. Follow elZinc recommendations regarding warming up zinc metal prior to forming.
