Application

Ahmarra specialise in bespoke internal screens (internal windows).

Internal screens enable the transfer of natural light throughout internal spaces.

The screens can be standalone internal windows (i.e. elevated from floor level and not attached to a door), or configured with Ahmarra's internal door ranges as fanlights, side screens, elevated side screens or multiple side screens.

Glass is supplied loose for installation by others following the installation of the screen (window). Approved Document B of the Building Regulations: Table A4, gives guidance on the ‘Limitations of the use of uninsulated glazed elements on escape routes’.

Particular care should be taken when screens are full length and are fitted over an atrium where a potential fall from height needs to be considered. Specific line-loading of glass must be stipulated by the architect/specifier.

Manufacturer guidance

For glass to be classified as an impact-safe material, it must undergo the Safety Standard Test. This test is used to define the level at which glass will ‘break safely’, meaning there will be no large shards of glass, only small fragments that will cause less injury. The classifications within BS EN 12600 are;

  • Class 1B1 (highest performing),
  • Class 2B2,
  • Class 3B3 (lowest performing).

Classification

E - Integrity.

Guidance for specification option:

E offers the base level of fire performance and is also the minimum requirement stated by the UK Building Regulations. It provides effective protection against fire and smoke, but does not prevent the transmission of heat.

EW - Integrity and radiation.

Guidance for specification option:

EW represents an increased level of protection. Fire glass that achieves the EW classification offers the same level of protection against fire and smoke as E, as well as a reduction in the amount of radiant heat transmitted to the protected side. Specifically, EW keeps radiant heat below 15 kW/m².

EI - Integrity and insulation.

Guidance for specification option:

The EI classification offers the highest level of protection. As well as providing a robust barrier against fire and smoke, EI also offers a significant reduction in the amount of heat transferred through the glass, keeping the average temperature of the unexposed side below 140°C. This means that if there is a raging fire on one side of the glass, with temperatures above 800°C, building users on the unexposed side remain protected from the heat and can make an escape.

Please note: While the type of protection offered is determined by the product’s classification, the length of time for which this protection can be maintained will vary from 30 minutes up to 180 minutes.
