Description

Promatect®-XS is a light weight board, which provides a high degree of strength and dimensional stability, offers a solution for mezzanine floors, and is suitable for internal areas. It is classified as A1 non-combustible according to BS EN 13501-1.

PROMATECT®-XS has a smooth surface and is off-white in appearance, it can be left undecorated or easily finished with paint.

PROMATECT®-XS features and benefits:

  • 60 minutes fire resistance, loadbearing capacity, integrity and insulation.
  • Single layer product used, fixed directly to the underside of the primary and secondary floor structure.
  • Board can be also used to fire protect the supporting steel beams and columns.
  • PROMATECT®-XS boards can be installed in unheated spaces, such as warehouses, without deteriorating.
  • High quality surface finishing.
  • System is based on 15 mm-thick PROMATECT-XS® boards. Boards are available in other thickness, consult manufacturer for details.

The supporting steel framework of the mezzanine floor, including the columns, should be protected for a period equal to or greater than that required for the mezzanine floor. Typically, 15 mm-thick Promat PROMATECT®-XS boards will provide 60 minutes' fire resistance, based on a limiting steel temperature of 550⁰C and a maximum steel section factor up to 200 m-1.

Manufacturer guidance

Etex Building Performance Limited warrants that their passive fire protection products and component parts, when installed in the building originally designed, built and unaltered in accordance with the conditions and procedures set out in Promat Passive Fire Protection Handbook, this specification document and associated CAD drawings; and any specific technical recommendations made in relation to the above project, shall be durable and free from defects due to faulty manufacturing or factory workmanship.

The system must be installed by a third-party accredited fire protection contractor, and where included in the specification, solely with proprietary products and components as supplied by Etex Building Performance Limited.

The scope of this warranty will be dependent on the application and the environment in which the products are being installed.

System performance

The below specification provides load-bearing capacity, integrity and insulation through the floor structure, however, compartmentation through the primary steel supporting structure should be checked in line with EN 13381-4: 2013.
Minimum Promatect®-XS thickness in relation to compartmentation: 15 mm = 60 minutes.

Guidance for specification option:

Full boards (as supplied): 2500 x 1200 mm.

Fasteners

Fixings to joists and perimeter channel(s): minimum M3.5 x 32 mm CSK Self Drilling Screws at maximum 200 mm centres, screw length to give a minimum penetration of 10 mm through joists.
Coverstrips over the transverse board joints, tightly wedged perpendicularly in between the cold rolled steel joists and secured with Chisel Point Staples - 35 x 10.5 x 1.5 mm at maximum 100 mm centres.

System accessories

FSi Promat Pyrocoustic® Fire Resistant Sealant.

Guidance for specification option:

Designed to seal any slight gaps at interfaces between the boards and the substrate, which have low movement requirements (±7.5%). Contains no solvents or halogen compounds.

Finishes should be applied in accordance with Promat TDS 056 and the advice given in the Promat Passive Fire Protection Handbook.

Guidance for specification option:

Insert requirements, minimum 38 mm-thick flooring grade P6 chipboard, T&G on long edges.

  • Fixing: M5.5 x 60 mm timberdeck winged self-drilling screws at 300 mm centres (two fixings per board at each joist position).

M5.5 x 60 mm timberdeck winged self-drilling screws.

Joists

Cold rolled steel joists, minimum 141 x 54 x 1.3 mm (web x flange x gauge) channel joists at maximum 600 mm centres based on a 3 m span.

Guidance for specification option:

  • This may need to be increased depending on spanning and loading requirements.
  • Galvanized steel channel joists designed in accordance with BS EN 1993-1-1 UK National Annex to Eurocode 3 at maximum 600 mm centres for loadings up to 5.0 kN/m².
  • Larger joists for greater spans are permissible, provided that the maximum bending moments and shear forces do not exceed those of the original fire test.
  • Consult mezzanine joist manufacturers for joist sizes and centres, appropriate to the loading requirements of the mezzanine floor and the span of the joists.

Manufacturer guidance

The ends of each joist are connected to the web or upper flange of the supporting steel beams with steel angle cleats. The cleats are fastened to the beam and joist with two bolts, the cleats and bolts to be sized by mezzanine joist manufacturer.

The lower web of each pair of joists is connected at mid-span with a steel threaded rod tie bar, nuts and washers. The size of the tie bars is typically M12.

Supporting structure

The supporting steel framework of the mezzanine floor, including the columns, should be protected for a period equal to or greater than that required for the mezzanine floor.

Perimeter

Perimeter channel minimum 141 x 54 x 1.3 mm (web x flange x gauge) perimeter channel joists with steel angle cleats fastened to the web or upper flange of the steelwork with two bolts at each connection, cleats and bolts to be sized by mezzanine joist manufacturer.
Perimeter channel joists fixed to the substrate with M10 x 75 mm sleeve anchor bolt at maximum 500 mm centres.

Smoke seals

During construction, ensure that all gaps are sealed with FSi Promat Pyrocoustic® Fire Resistant Sealant so that there are no air-paths and a smoke seal is achieved.
