Application

Beyond playgrounds, bonded rubber mulch is used in:

  • Landscaping: As an alternative to wood mulch in gardens, around trees and in flower beds.
  • Commercial spaces: Around office buildings and in public parks for aesthetic and practical purposes.

Description

Rubber mulch is a resilient and permeable safety surfacing solution made from recycled forklift tyres, colour coated with a durable PU covering to achieve a natural bark-like appearance.

This product is not only aesthetically pleasing but also easy to install and cost-effective. It involves mixing the rubber mulch with a specially formulated, unpigmented resin binder in a forced action mixer before laying and levelling it. This results in a low-maintenance, permeable, impact-absorbing surface. Rubber Mulch is wheelchair-friendly, commonly employed in playgrounds, play areas, parks, and recreational spaces requiring a protective flooring with a critical fall height.

Features and benefits:

  • Permeable: Allows rain and surface water to naturally drain into the ground below.
  • Natural appearance: Takes on the look of natural mulch due to its distinctive shape and coatings.
  • Low maintenance: Requires minimal preventative and reactive maintenance after installation.
  • Environmentally friendly: Made from recycled forklift tyres, contributing to waste reduction while providing a safe surface.
  • Impact absorbing: Manufactured from rubber and installed at an appropriate depth, it offers a secure surfacing solution.

FAQ's

Q: How soon can the surface be used after installation?

A: It is recommended to wait a minimum of 24 hours, especially during winter months when the binder could take longer to cure.

Q: Can graphics be installed into rubber mulch surfacing?

A: Abstract and coloured shapes can be created with rubber mulch, however rubber mulch graphics are not as defined as wetpour graphics, so we would recommend shapes being at least 0.5m in size for a quality finish.

Q: Is rubber mulch suitable in areas of high wear-and-tear? E.g. Swings and roundabouts.

A: Due to the large shred size of the rubber, the bond between the shred does not give as high a tensile strength as wetpour. Therefore, we would recommend using wetpour for areas which are likely to be subject to heavy wear-and-tear. This could simply be a wear pad of wetpour within a larger mulch area.

Q: Is rubber mulch porous?

A: Yes, rubber mulch is a porous product.

Q: Can vehicles be driven on rubber mulch?

A: Rubber mulch can accommodate light weight vehicles travelling across the surface (e.g. golf buggies), but it is not suitable for regular vehicle use.

Q: What can rubber mulch be laid onto?

A: Rubber mulch can be laid onto MOT Type 1, Concrete, Tarmac and Grass. However, there is a potential risk of soft spots in rainy areas when installing onto grass.

Q: How long will the rubber mulch surface last for?

A: This will depend on how heavily it will be used and how it is maintained. DCM have been back on sites that are 10 years old where the mulch is still in good condition.

Q: What do I do when my rubber mulch surface is looking tired or suffering from localised areas of wear?

A: Localised wear can be addressed by replacing the worn-out material to restore surface continuity. The surface can also be sprayed with a new coating of pigmented polyurethane to restore the colour and enhance surface strength. Both processes will greatly extend the life of your rubber mulch surface.

Q: How do I maintain the rubber mulch surface?

A: Sweep regularly and jet wash using a low pressure setting periodically to keep leaves, grass and other organic debris off the surface.

Q: What depth is rubber mulch laid to?

A: The minimum depth rubber mulch can be laid to is 40mm.

Q: Can rubber mulch be installed in the rain?

A: Unfortunately, rubber mulch can only be installed in dry weather conditions.

Q: Is rubber mulch environmentally friendly?

A: Yes. All of the rubber used comes from recycling end of life tyres thus greatly reducing the landfill risk.
