Application

Suitable for use on projects where traditional new brick-work or brick slips are impractical.

Description

A versatile alternative to traditional brickwork, this through-colour, polymer render is suitable for use on projects where traditional new brick-work or brick slips are impractical.

Features and benefits:

  • Brick effect render can be used as a render only application or in conjunction with one of the WBS External Wall Insulation Systems.
  • Brick effect render is applied in two coats. Firstly a coloured wet base coat is applied followed by a complimentary coloured wet top coat. The top coat is then cut through to expose the base coat ‘mortar’ layer, thus creating the brick effect finish.
  • WBS Brick Effect Render can be used on full elevations or simply as a method of adding an interesting detailing at building corners or window heads.
  • The top layer of mortar can be stippled or rollered to give a rustic effect and powdered pigments may also be added to freshly applied mortar to create the illusion of aged bricks.
  • This product holds BBA certification as part of a WBS External Wall Insulation System.

Manufacturer guidance

  • Brush down substrate to remove any friable material, algae or lichen. Any ridges or protrusions should be removed and hollows filled to provide a smooth surface.
  • Apply fungicidal wash if required to remove all algae / fungus from the substrate.
  • Apply stabilising solution if required to help improve adhesion and offer uniform suction.
  • Attach base rails and the relevant surface profiles.
  • Apply the WBS Basecoat to an even thickness of 6-8 mm.
  • Bed the WBS Mineral Fibre Mesh into the top third of the basecoat, overlapped by 75 mm. Mesh to be kept taught and fixed from top downwards. No laps within 150 mm of any reveal or corner. Ensure mesh is covered by the basecoat.
  • Bed 200 x 200 mm off cuts of mesh positioned at 45º to window openings/ corners.
  • Lightly scratch basecoat surface with a scratch comb to provide a key for finishing coat. Allow basecoat to fully dry before applying the finishing coat.
  • Decorative Finish Coat: WBS Brick Effect Render.
  • Apply first coloured mortar coat at a thickness of 6-8 mm. Do not over trowel or polish surface.
  • When green (set but not fully hardened) apply coloured top coat at a thickness of 4-6 mm and texture as required (a rustic effect can be achieved by lightly stippling the surface with a stiff brush / comb / sponge / spatula).
  • Shading can also be achieved by applying Brick Effect Render in powder form to the freshly applied face layer (in a contrasting or blended shade) using a dry paint brush or similar, thereafter immediately texturing. Do not apply water during the set.
  • After the face layer has been shaded and textured, and following initial stiffening of the applied materials, cut through the face layer and into the mortar layer using the appropriate cutting tool. This reproduces recessed mortar coursing of the brickwork or stonework; spirit levels, templates and straight edges should be used for guiding this operation.
  • Experience will dictate the best time for the operation to take place; too soon and the spirit levels and other guides will mark and spoil the surface, the cutter will rag and tear the material; too late and it becomes difficult and then impossible to cut. At the correct time a clean cut is easily achieved.
