This transformative £24 million project establishes a dedicated space for artistic expression, fostering creativity and community within the prestigious educational institution. Expertly crafted DorSuite doors grace the building, providing a sophisticated backdrop for artistic pursuits. The BriefBrighton College embarked on an ambitious project to develop a state-of-the-art performing arts center. The vision called for a multifunctional 400-seat theatre, dedicated dance and drama studios, classrooms for English and Drama, and a social gathering space. KRFT, the competition-winning architects, and NHA, the lead architects from stage 4 onwards, meticulously planned the building to cultivate a vibrant hub for artistic exploration. The SolutionThe project presented several opportunities for DorSuite to demonstrate its strengths in flexibility and exceeding expectations. Our team collaborated closely to develop an alternative screen design with rebated sections that met both aesthetic and functional requirements. This solution-oriented approach, requiring multiple iterations and open communication, exemplifies DorSuite's commitment to working in partnership with architects to achieve the best possible outcome. Bespoke Manufacturing: DorSuite's expertise in bespoke manufacturing came into play with the sheer variety of door and screen requirements. The project encompassed approximately 40 unique profiles. Sourcing Rift Cut timber, a unique material unfamiliar to our initial supplier, presented an additional challenge. DorSuite's agility and established network ensured this hurdle was overcome, with the timber procured and inspected before arriving at our production facility. A Blend of Beauty and Functionality: The ironmongery throughout the project reflects DorSuite's ability to deliver a combination of aesthetics and functionality. Bespoke, powder-coated bronze finishes complemented the design, alongside standard stainless steel options. The doorsets themselves showcased this variety, featuring American black walnut, European Rift cut timber, and various finishes including veneers, laminates, painted surfaces, and even dual-faced options. DorSuite also incorporated high acoustic doorsets and screens with double-glazed units, ensuring superior sound control within the performance spaces. The DorSuite Team:A dedicated team of specialists at DorSuite oversaw the design, manufacturing, and logistical complexities of this project. Their expertise in navigating challenges, coupled with a commitment to open collaboration, ensured the successful delivery of doors and screens that exceeded expectations.Craig HigginsProject ManagerGraham BorthwickSpecification DesignWalid ZrafiSpecification Design

Rosebank Distillery

Rosebank Distillery

DorSuite

Reviving History: DorSuite's Role in Rosebank's Restoration Rosebank, a distinguished name in Scottish whisky, reopened in 2021 after almost three decades of closure. Located on the banks of the Forth and Clyde Canal, this historic distillery had lain dormant since 1993. The new owners were dedicated to reviving Rosebank while safeguarding its historical integrity, transforming the site into a modern visitor attraction that maintained its unique character and rich heritage. The Challenge Restoring Rosebank posed a distinctive challenge: balancing the need for modernisation with the preservation of its historical essence. The aim was to revitalise the distillery into a functional, contemporary space while respecting its original architecture. DorSuite was tasked with supplying bespoke doorsets that complemented both the traditional and modern elements of the project, all while adhering to stringent safety and design standards. Adding to the complexity, the work needed to be completed within a tight deadline. DorSuite's Solution DorSuite played a crucial role in ensuring the success of the Rosebank project. Working in close collaboration with ISG Construction and Michael Laird Architects, DorSuite delivered 83 custom-made timber doorsets. These doors, with fire-resistance ratings ranging from FD30s to FD120s, ensured safety and compliance, without compromising on the visual appeal. Of the 83 doorsets, 46 were finished with Armolam Laminate, providing a robust and contemporary aesthetic. The remaining 37 doors were Ash-Veneered Lacquered with Loose-Stop Design Solid Ash Frames, adding a traditional touch that matched the distillery’s historic look. Time constraints added pressure to the project, with the doors needed within just six weeks. Despite this, DorSuite worked efficiently to address any compliance gaps, ensuring all regulatory requirements were met and successfully provided fully certified doorsets that were delivered on time, ready for installation. Additionally, the project involved the implementation of a complex access control system. DorSuite coordinated with the main contractor and M&E contractor to integrate the access control mechanisms, particularly for the fully glazed doors where concealed access control was required to maintain the clean, modern look. The Outcome The reopening of Rosebank Distillery marked the successful revival of a historic landmark, blending the old with the new. DorSuite’s bespoke doorsets contributed significantly to the overall feel of the space, providing both functional and aesthetic value. Their technical expertise and attention to detail helped create a welcoming, secure environment that pays homage to the distillery’s past while catering to the demands of modern use.
