10 Brindley Place, Birmingham, is an architectural feat of beauty with its varying forms of textures and bond patterns in the brickwork, formed together with Ibstock's Leicester Grey Stock, Atlas Dark Grey and Blue Glazed bricks.It is also a testament the greatness of retrofitting our existing buildings for improved performance.The exceptional £40m back-to-the-frame retrofit transformation of 10 Brindley Place – Birmingham’s largest office refurbishment scheme, achieved an EPC A rating exceeding Government requirements for 2030 with 65% annual operational energy saving. The design drew on thermal insulation, air tightness, glazing ratios, and glass specifications to reduce heating and cooling demands, thereby saving energy, operational costs, and carbon.The specification of Ibstock Futures and Ash & Lacy's MechSlip provided a completely new energy efficient external façade system clad in a brick slip, which is a major contributor to the elevated EPC A rating.Every year in the UK, 50,000 buildings are demolished. And of the 200,000 tonnes of waste that are produced each year as a nation, nearly two-thirds is construction waste, according to the Architects’ Journal’s RetroFirst campaign.Ibstock Futures provides low carbon, external façade systems as a solution to architects and specifiers in mid to high rise retrofit that provides:Improved thermal performance;Ease of construction;Range of external finishes including brick slips.

House in Barlaston

This 2018 Brick Awards winning project, the development on Creek Road, comprises of 83 contemporary homes and 1,800 sqm of commercial floor space. The architectural brief called for the brickwork to mirror an existing type and colour dating back to Victorian times. The selection of building materials was pivotal to the realisation of the project, and after careful consideration of the various options a decision was taken to centre the construction around one primary brick type: British manufactured Ibstock’s Funton Old Chelsea Yellow bricks, locally sourced from our Ashdown Factory, East Sussex.

Designed by SPPARC Architecture as a place for living and a space for learning, the 14-storey Music Box is a mixed-use development incorporating a campus for the London College of Contemporary Media and 55 residential units, including on-site affordable housing. The three-dimensional projecting brickwork pattern, which required special bricks glazed on all visible surfaces, reads like a sheet of musical notes across the page, providing relief, rhythm and interest. Those able to read guitar tab may recognise that the brick patterns resemble Eric Clapton’s guitar riff in Cream’s song ‘White Room’.

Durability, safety and aesthetics needed to work together for the Viking House project. With the refurbishment nestled among conventionally built brick buildings there was a need for a contemporary look that mirrored the local vernacular. Viking House, a managed student accommodation at the University of Lincoln made up of three five-storey buildings and standing 20m tall, was designed to reflect the university’s continuing progress. Mechslip was chosen along with Ibstock’s Leicester Red facing bricks, due to its A1 rated non-combustible to EN13501-1 standards making it the ideal choice for a modern high-rise structure.
