Making an ImpactOne Great Cumberland Place is 5,511m2 of high-grade office and retail space, over 8 floors behind an Art Deco façade. Each of the three entrances receives hundreds of pounding feet every day. The design ambitions here were to maintain and enhance the historic elements; the curved draft lobby, original hardwood, brass details, and marble floors.Water and dirt collection was the major challenge for all entrances. But, in particular, a dedicated entrance leading to 121 bicycle lockers housed in the basement!We’ve worked with Allford Hall Monaghan Morris (AHMM) on several projects, so they knew INTRAsystems’ premium Entrance Matting products would be up to the task.Combination inserts deliver with efficiencyIn a busy location with so much coming and going, performance, serviceability and longevity were key. The robust aluminium profile is ideal for heavy-duty applications too and comes with a 10-year warranty.The planks are easy to cut and install, provide flush transitions between outdoor and indoor flooring substrates to meet DDA regulations.Ensuring safety and efficient maintenance is of paramount importance on the railways so getting the right materials specification for each situation is vital. Facilities teams need a product that performs at a high level and adheres to all the various restrictions and regulations.Precision in Every DetailGWR chose a specification with outstanding performance and design flexibility, but they also earned LEED and BREEAM points for sustainability.INTRAform is EPD-verified and uses 100% recycled aluminium frames which can be recycled or reused again and again. We collaborated closely with the design team and provided detailed drawings and measurements for the Entrance Matting to ensure the success of the project.Even with such detailed specifications and drawings however, we understand the allowance for anomalies on site. INTRA supplied the planks 50mm oversized for on-site trimming. The installers could get a snug fit and adjust the planks incrementally to align accurately with the other textural and contrasting features in the flooring scheme.Elevating EntrancesThe Railway Entrance Matting now continues the signposting sections, linking up with the station flooring designs perfectly.Reactions and feedback from staff and passengers using the new station have been excellent.The Entrance Matting is already delivering on the objectives of keeping people safe, protecting the flooring beyond and providing key visual cues. And with INTRAform’s 10-year warranty and proven track record, it will stand the test of time.

A Very Victorian Problem The Royal College Building is Category B listed. Designed by David Barclay, the 190s, gargantuan 4-storey Italianate college is a monument to Victorian architecture. It houses the University of Strathclyde's Principal and Vice-Chancellor's residence, alongside various university departments and independent businesses. As you'd expect, the entrance lobby is a grand affair and welcomes thousands of students, staff and visitors through its arched bays and up its curved marble staircase. But, with a Glasgow city-centre location and architecture pre-dating modern draught lobbies or revolving doors, Estates Services were losing a battle with the inclement weather. They needed to take control and prevent water from being traced into the building, making the subsequent tiled floor and marble steps slippery. A Custom ApproachThe University's Building Surveyor contacted INTRAsystems while exploring potential products in their ongoing experiments. After a follow-up call subsequent site visit, it was clear they had a design opportunity to create a unique Entrance Mat for a unique building. With its listed building status, the Entrance Matting system needed to be true to its heritage as a technical college of engineering - practically perfect and sympathetic to the building's aesthetics. Customised Chessboard Tiled Entrance MattingWe advised increasing the Entrance Mat from 4m2 to 10m2, the full width of the Polished red ashlar portico entrance bay and all the way to the marble staircase. However, extending the small matwell wasn't possible because of listed building constraints, so we suggested filling in the existing recessed matwell and installing a surface-mounted system with ramped edges. Fine Details But Heavy DutyWe custom-made 380 x 380mm INTRAshape tiles, with a black anodised finish and combined them with INTRAlux Elite Black 608 and Grey 606 inserts, to match the existing chessboard, monochrome flooring tiles perfectly. INTRAlux Elite has a high-density pile of coarse and fine polyamide fibres made from 100% Econyl (recycled plastics). They boast high moisture absorption (up to 5.4L/m2) and scraping abilities. The heavy-duty inserts also deliver durability, comfort and excellent sound absorption. This combined with the modular INTRAshape system, meets the multi-directional traffic requirement. A Perfect MatchProcurement partner and preferred contractor, Kirkton Flooring, managed the project with our support for layout and drawings, then Master Matting completed the install. First impressions were positive, and it's a marked improvement on earlier mitigation attempts. "It looks fab thanks, just exactly what I imagined it to be like. The transformation of the iconic old Marylebone Town Hall into a major new facility for the London Business School was taken on by Sheppard Robson Architects. Sammy Ofer Centre is a great educational institute now even so with better facilities for students to learn in. A building with such a heritage deserves the best entrance. This is further enhanced by the glass and steel structure that creates a clear distinction between the two building. As a result, we could not be prouder in installing our most flagship Entrance Matting to prevent the ingress of dirt and moisture into the building.

Located in Prescot, Merseyside, the new Shakespeare North Playhouse boasts a traditional, 470-seat timber theatre at its heart. The home of some of the great author and playwright’s earliest works. This prestigious building captures the soul of Elizabethan storytelling, drawing in modern audiences from across the country. Opened in 2022, the new theatre has played a ‘leading role’ in the ongoing regeneration of Knowsley. Carrying the weight of one of the all-time greatest wordsmiths, meant that every inch of the Shakespeare North Playhouse had to combine the upper echelons of modern design quality with the traditional soul of a 16th century theatre.Traditional feel, modern capabilityTasked with providing a powerful first impression to the entrance of this characterful building, our INTRAflow product in a brass anodised finish was a great choice for the Matting. In keeping with the bronze within the reception area, the brass anodised finish added an extra quality touch. The INTRAlux Elite fibre insert completed the warm, welcoming look achieved in the final outcome.The INTRAflow product is perfect for heavy footfall areas and so, just the ticket for audiences of nearly 500 people all coming and going at once.An important consideration was the traditional wooden seating areas within the theatre. It was essential that the Entrance Matting would remove dirt and moisture quickly and effectively to protect such a unique interior. The foyer area has no external overhang meaning very little protection from the elements. All combined, this meant a high-performance specification was required. The debris channel systems help ensure as much dirt as possible is removed on entry.Sustainability and designSustainable practices and materials were a must for the client. To truly bring this archaic theatre into the modern world, the project had to be completed with the planet at its heart. With 5 million visitors to the park each year, café operators, Benugo, have quite a challenge maintaining service and facilities. Steeped in a rich artistic history, The Now Building in London is an architectural marvel designed to revive the musical majesty of the formerly named 'Tin Pan Alley''.Inspired by the striking lights of Times Square in New York, the new, multi-purpose music venue and art installation is truly a sight to behold. Boasting a foyer that is covered from wall to ceiling with 8K screens broadcasting entertainment, music and digital artworks in breath-taking 360-degree, interactive 4D quality. For such an incredible, interactive and artistic experience – the ventilated flooring grilles were never going to take centre stage! However, the high quality systems were specified to perform and subtly enhance the spectacular digital aesthetic and unmistakeable gold exteriors surrounding them. An immersive experienceRegarded as London’s new home of music, art and culture, The Now Building plays host to 5 stories of interactive digital art, venue rooms, restaurants, studios and more. To achieve such an immersive experience for visitors, ventilated flooring grilles were specially designed and adapted for the floors, skirting and feature walls. INTRA Ceiling Grilles were also specified to hide various structural and functional services above, masking the pipework and HVAC units.The grille flooring uses a bespoke hinge bracket, custom designed for the project, to provide easy access to electrical socket points below. When it came to the feature walls, INTRA created a unique solution; the first of its kind on the market: a tailored version of INTRAgrille T2850, designed to plug the ventilation gaps for the huge 8K screens, allowing airflow to pass through and keep the screens from overheating. A matt black coating keeps this grille work ‘invisible’ – ensuring it doesn’t detract from the visitors’ viewing experience.Truly Spectacular!Proactive developing our existing product range to solve specific challenges for the site was one of the core successes of this project, as we were able to mould new fixings to help achieve Orms original design vision.The finished article is truly spectacular. The Now building and wider Outernet complex is now a centre piece of London’s artistic culture. The UK Hydrographic Office (UKHO) collects and supplies data to the Royal Navy and merchant shipping to help protect lives at sea. We originally designed INTRAform FR for London Transport to meet their Section 12 underground fire safety regulation. Our FR inserts contain fire-resistant rubber with low toxic smoke emissions and passes EN45545, the European railway standard for fire safety. The multi-directional inserts are extremely strong and hard-wearing planks with our 100% recycled aluminium construction. An Enduring CombinationINTRAlux Elite fibre is high quality and a great all-rounder for zones 2 and 3. Often chosen for intensive commercial applications for sound dampening, high-performance and endurance. The combination of fibre with the fire-resistant rubber helps to extend the lifespan thanks to their hard-wearing nature, plank formation, moisture absorption and open construction. The new £165 million Victoria Gate Shopping Centre has opened its doors to the public for the first time on 20th October 2016. As a long-time client of INTRAsystems, Waitrose in Basingstoke trusted our products again when it came to refreshing their Entrance Matting.Looking to update their matting system, Waitrose were keen to try our latest and most sustainable Entrance Matting product. Waitrose knew they needed a highly absorbent, heavy-duty product to be installed. Given there is a travellator that shoppers walk onto directly after passing over the Matting, avoiding high foot traffic carrying excess moisture onto the metal surface is essential to prevent slips. The 20 sq ft Mat Well was also located next to a trolley storage area. Because of this, the durability of our EPD certified INTRAlink² product a must. Waitrose had full faith in our product to supply exactly what they were looking for as a long-time corporate customer.Effectively Sustainable. Officially opened in 1872, White Hart Lane cemented itself as the home of Tottenham Hotspur Football Club. As part of the Northumberland Development Project to redevelop the White Hart Lane Stadium and regenerate the area, the station was also selected to be upgraded. The upgrade consisted of a new ticketing hall, adding two lifts for better access and an additional entrance to ease match day traffic. INTRAsystems worked with the client in supplying the Entrance Matting for White Hart Lane. INTRAform FR was installed as it uses the specialist FR (Fire Resistant) insert which also can withstand multi-directional traffic.

Buckley Gray Yeoman's (BGY) vision 'reduced the overall energy demand of the building by 62%, and saved 10.260 tonne CO2' by renewing instead of demolishing. It is certified BREEAM Outstanding and WELL platinum. Redefining the Possibilities for Old BuildingsBGY carefully chose materials throughout the scheme for their sustainability, performance and aesthetics. But, one of the critical practical considerations for the Entrance Matting was compatibility with raised access flooring. After using INTRAtech to great visual effect in another project, they understood it would look fantastic and perform well. But they were thrilled that it could coordinate with raised access flooring and fulfil all the projects sustainability criteria as well. Cut to ShapeAs INTRAtech could be cut to the desired shape, it offered BGY greater design opportunities. It meant they could more efficiently achieve the curved shape, which reflects the organic form of the building's footprint. The design repeats curved shapes across the building but culminates in zonal flooring materials and mirrored ceiling panels in the entrance lobbies. We produced detailed drawing and supplied pre-made larger panels, labelled clearly for easier installation. This helped to ensure we accommodated floor service panels and made transport and handling more efficient. Bonus Points for PracticalityBoth entrances have service panels in the raised access flooring, so for easy access for maintenance and servicing, small sections of the Entrance Matting can be lifted. But the building welcomes 100s of visitors to office and retail spaces each day, so the Entrance Matting must endure constant comings and goings. INTRAtech has an open construction to allow water and dirt to drain away efficiently,, so is ideal for the revolving doors. Thanks to its modular square frame, it has the benefit of withstanding multi-directional traffic. Whichever direction a visitor moves, the fibres remain uptight in the square module, so INTRAtech Entrance Matting can efficiently absorb, clean and protect - time after time, after time. Sustainable as StandardBGY chose INTRAsystems for our unrivalled whole-life environmental commitments and proven product application. With all-glass revolving doors and vast glazing panels, the INTRAform DM entrance matting at 338 Euston Road appears to flow seamlessly from inside to out. Encompassing the angled and recessed doorway, the external matwell continues the line of the interior mat to square. This interesting combination of internal and external matting creates a highly practical design feature. Zonal entrance matting system Using INTRAform DM with differing inserts in the internal and external zones, the architect has created a two-stage zonal system. In zone 1 external, the matting is inset with multidirectional rubber which scrapes away excess dirt and moisture from footwear and wheels. With the entrance on the corner of the building, the flexible rubber fins ensure performance, whichever the direction of approach. In the primary mat, (zone 2, internal), the profiles are inset with highly absorbent INTRAlux Elite polyamide fibre. These inserts remove and retain any remaining dirt and moisture to ensure a safe and slip-free entrance. With the revolving door sheltered within the recess, the matting here is also inset with fibre. Made from 100% Econyl regenerated nylon fibre and capable of absorbing 5.4l/m2, INTRAlux Elite is both a practical and sustainable choice. Minimal design, maximum impact The INTRAlux Elite fibre in Grey 606 matches tonally with the multidirectional rubber. The oversized entrance matting panels lessen the use of diving t-bars. While the positioning of the t-bars has been carefully planned to align with the threshold. Along with the glazed façade, these elements help maximise the impact of the architect’s design, to create a stunning entrance.
