Constructed in the early 80s by Arup Associates, 1 Finsbury Avenue has been carefully redeveloped as part of its evolution from single occupancy into a mixed-use offering. Behind the grade 2 listed bronze façade, work included the re-establishment of pedestrian access through the ground floor to reconnect the building with Finsbury Avenue Square and the wider neighbourhood. The bright, bold work of artist Morag Myerscough featured in this lower atrium echoes the lines of the façade. To match the interior aesthetic, black anodised INTRAflow entrance matting was specified for both East and West entrances.

With over 57,000 sq ft of sustainable workspace, it is home to world-leading companies and start-ups across the legal, financial, technology and media sectors.BGY has used INTRAsystems products in several projects and the team are firm fans of INTRAshape and the creative flexibility it offers. So, they had INTRAshape in mind when designing their striking lobby concept. The full width Entrance Matting is as expected, but the design feature of inset fibres within the geometric tiles pushes creative options and challenges expectations from Entrance Matting.INTRAform Follows FunctionBGY specified INTRAform DM low profile in the revolving doors and full width across the primary section of the lobby for clean lines as well as clean and dry feet. The secondary intricate INTRAshape and tile scheme adds creative impact while providing extra absorbency and scrubbing function. They chose multi-directional rubber inserts within the revolving doors to cope with direct water ingress. Then, INTRAlux Elite fibres span the full-width of the entrance to soak up excess water. They selected Grey 606 fibres as a neutral yet practical palette, while co-ordinating with the geometric tiled section, which reflects the ceiling details.A Perfect Fitting PrototypeOur client shared their concepts early in 2022, so we worked closely with them to make their vision come to life. From initial drawings to refining grout tolerances and tile dimensions, we collaborated to get the right specification. INTRA developed prototypes to test in situ and thanks to careful planning and precision measurements, those prototypes went into final production with no dimensional changes. The result looks incredible and proves what’s possible with creativity, collaboration and a keen eye for detail!

Make an Impact With Office Entrance Matting AXIS House, office design and fit-out company, is in the business of Shaping Futures and with this project, they revolutionised the past by transforming a dull, industrial, 1950s warehouse unit in Dorset into a modern masterpiece of functional office space with inspiring showrooms. The matting brief was to create an entrance with an unexpected wow factor, marrying design, performance and sustainability. The team wanted to create a lasting first impression for visitors coming in from the drab industrial surroundings outside, to enter a modern building filled with possibilities.Create a Dramatic TransitionEntrance Matting fills the entire lobby. But it’s not your average Entrance Mat. The enclosed space offers a dark, dramatic transition area with one of our more exclusive products INTRAshape and using the higly moisture-absorbent Ultimate fibre. This delivers a luxurious, carpet-like impression as visitors pass through into the double-height, open plan office beyond. A space filled with light, plants, and natural materials.AXIS House chose INTRAshape in a small rectangular form and brickwork pattern for the mat well. Ultimate fibre inserts in Anthracite (907) fill the matwell, which is four metres long. The overall effect is thick and luxurious, more like plush carpet than Entrance Matting and absorbs everything the British Weather throws at it too!Wow, Wow, Wow; Design, Sustainability, and PerformanceAs our sister company, AXIS House naturally looked to INTRAsystems for their Entrance Matting! The team hadn’t worked with Agata, the Interior Designer before, but she was “impressed with the choice of colours and designs” and “thrilled with the project.” We helped the team visualise a more striking finish; taking what is a functional product and turned it into a real design feature. It works, looks brilliant, and will stay that way for a long time.DesignThe Entrance Mat design mirrors the LED ceiling light-well above as well as the width of the double doors. The shape also echoes other dynamic rectangular design features throughout the building.Bronze, anodised aluminium adds a layer of luxury and ties in perfectly with the die-cut company logos on the facing wall. To complete the look, the perimeter border is laid in sheet form with INTRAlux Ultimate in contrasting warm neutral Lichen (912), a beautifully on-trend grey green.INTRAshape breaks design boundaries and Entrance Matting traditions, offering distinctive design possibilities. There’s nothing else like this on the market. With an extensive range of shapes and colours to choose from, you have the freedom to unleash your creativity, combining forms and textures with infinite possibilities to create rhythm, movement, and perspective.Sustainability INTRAshape and INTRAlux Ultimate perfectly aligned with AXIS House’s commitment to sustainability and their SKA rating ambitions.INTRAlux Ultimate features ECONYL®; 100% recycled content and they specified PureBase; our PVC-free backing option. Sustainable choices that help shape a better future.PureBase has a significantly lower environmental whole-life impact, from production to disposal. It’s also much easier to handle and install as it is 20% lighter and 3 x more flexible. ECONYL® is regenerated waste nylon. It has the same properties as brand new nylon, but can be infinitely recycled and re-moulded. ECONYL® is cradle-to-cradle certified and eligible for LEED® v4 points.PerformanceOur products helped AXIS House achieve the prestigious WELL Building Standards and SKA Gold rating (soft flooring criteria) for the entire building.High-performing Entrance Matting contributes to WELL Standards on air quality management by absorbing dust, liquids, and air pollution efficienty. The final specification also delivers outstanding performance and aesthetics. This office Entrance Matting provides excellent protection for hard floor surfaces, ensuring durability and longevity for commercial office settings. The INTRAlux Ultimate inserts have a 900g/m² pile weight and feature the latest fibre innovation for three-times-faster moisture absorption. Excellent Bfl-s1 fire resistance and a 10-year warranty complete the high performance stats.INTRAsystems Provide Everything You NeedAs always, we supported AXIS House throughout their project. Making an Entrance at London's leading net zero CAT A ProjectWithin London’s Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, Holbein Gardens is a remarkable building just off Sloane Square that seeks to lead the way for companies seeking to achieving net-zero goals. Blenheim House Construction (BHC) helped realise Grosvenor’s vision to turn a tired old 1980s building into a net zero exemplar.A bare bones CAT A project, the site boasts quadruple environmental certification, including BREEAM Outstanding and WELL gold accreditation. Naturally, market-leading sustainable Entrance Matting was required to echo the space’s green ethos.INTRAsystems was the obvious choice thanks to our extensive range of sustainable products that help meet WELL and BREEAM standards.A sustainable successAcross the entire scheme, suppliers were challenged to use the industry’s most innovative, sustainable products, aiming at the highest levels of recycled content and recyclability.INTRAform DM Low Profile was chosen in the unique wood effect finish, which ticks all the boxes including validated data on embodied carbon and packing a double punch of sustainability and performance. Cool black Elite fibre inserts are made from 100% post-consumer waste with extremely low whole-life carbon emissions.Specified in 2020 but delayed through COVID, installation was completed in 2023. INTRA liaised with contractors to reschedule site surveys once pre-works were completed sufficiently for the entrance area to be assessed accurately. This was particularly crucial since the Entrance Mat sits in a lower position surrounded by steps and a raised floor level.Beauty and Brawn - Wood-effect Recycled Aluminium for Sustainable Entrance MattingThis smart wood-effect finish was new to the market back in 2020 but the client was confident it would meet their quality demands based on the many successful projects we’ve collaborated with them on across a variety of settings.Today the faux wood variant is a market-leading product that beats similar looking products made of real bamboo in terms of strength, longevity and good looks. Real wood systems don’t handle excessive moisture well, so the wrapped aluminium is ideal and more sustainable too. Read our bamboo vs aluminium blog to learn why.Fir for purposeNext door to London’s Sloane Square tube station, the 25,000 square feet office building is designed to house 2,500 office workers plus service staff and visitors. The entrance is immediately off the street with a small canopy and no draft lobby, so the matting will be exposed to direct and prevailing rain.Technically, INTRAform DM Low Profile was an ideal choice for a Cat A project like this as it can cope with high footfall and provides more flexibility than other systems. This 12mm profile variant can be surface mounted or shallow recessed for easier integration with whatever finishes the future tenants choose. And the interlocking plank system makes installation and onward retrofitting easy, if required.Entrance Matting Triumphs in Durability and Moisture AbsorptionINTRAform DM, with the Elite inserts will cope with rain with ease thanks to being happy in external (zone 1) and internal (zone 2) locations. It is typically found in shopping centres and office complexes as it’s hard-working and hard-wearing with excellent moisture absorption and dirt removal. The closed construction format and extra wide inserts make cleaning and maintaining INTRAform DM a breeze too. This will be essential to protect any materials chosen for the expansive lobby of this high-spec building.

'new beginnings' start with an impressive arrival sequence...Set between St. Paul’s Cathedral and The Old Bailey, 7 Newgate Street offers occupiers 75,000 sq ft of state-of-the-art contemporary office space following extensive refurbishment. An impressive reception, new 7th floor pavilion and communal roof terrace set the tone for the architectural detailing throughout the building. And, with a focus firmly on customer experience and environmental performance, the re-imagined building required a creative Entrance Matting product to match the overall design vision.High-spec design with beautiful curved features seen all around the lobby area needed the flexibility of INTRAflex Radial Entrance Matting to achieve the creative transition. As the only product on the market able to achieve such an aesthetic without compromising functionality, INTRAflex Radial was a fundamental inclusion for the project.Taking ShapeFrom revolving doors to curved glass covering the front entrance, achieving a matching, radial matting design was integral to the design’s success. Having originally requested a free sample to confirm INTRAflex Radial was the product the architects needed to achieve their vision, MORROW + LORRAINE specified our product having seen the quality, functionality and beauty of our product first hand. Opting for black INTRAlux Elite Fibre Inserts coupled with a black anodised finish – the dark colour scheme complements the interior of the newly refurbished building perfectly.Functionality was integral to the project and was integrated into the design. Although the revolving doors are the main entrances into the building, it was important to ensure that our creative Entrance Matting stretched beyond the width of the revolving doors to deal with the London foot traffic entering through the pass doors in order to protect against dirt and moisture. A commercial office space that Boasts 75,000 sq ft of space will obviously experience high levels of footfall, meaning the INTRAflex Radial was specified for its robust, heavy-duty performance as well as it’s flexible design capabilities.Building for the futureThe sustainable qualities of INTRAflex Radial were an essential consideration for this project. With a real focus on leaving as little an environmental impact as possible, the inclusion of the 100% recycled aluminium Entrance Matting and 100% Econyl fibre inserts helped the finished product to achieve Net Zero Carbon status. With our sustainably manufactured products also reducing environmental impacts in practice such as water usage due to less frequent cleaning, we’re proud to have been involved in such an ethically created, architecturally beautiful and truly creative space.

The striking, striped design, makes a design statement while meeting the advisable depth of 3m for effective Entrance Matting. INTRAflex XT covers the whole of zone 2 while inset sections of our INTRAflex SP feature in zone 3. Fine Design to Protect Fine FinishesMinife works with INTRAsystems on various projects and knows how best to apply Entrance Matting in creative ways. The design helps remove dirt and absorb moisture efficiently through the revolving and pass door within the first 12m2 section of matting. The subsequent area of inset sections provides extra visual impacts and removes more dirt. This not only reduces slip risk but protects onward flooring - important for six storeys of offices and a reception with oak herringbone parquet and Senso resin floor beyond. Striking and SustainableSustainability is a key part of Minife's design. The building is rated as BREEAM Excellent and billed as a low carbon workplace that even has its own bee hives on the roof! They chose natural materials, net zero and low-impact products throughout the building. So, our INTRAflex EPD helped inform their carbon calculations and specification choices. The linear, fluted and vertical lines inside and out reflect in the Entrance Matting and the attention to detail is impeccable. Minife specified the black anodised finish along with Elite Black 608 fibres to match the black glazing and interior design details. Engineered for Ease and EnduranceMinife picked INTRAflex because it offers easier maintenance and longevity. The plank system is laid in 'lanes' so you can replace each interlocking section to minimise waste or disruption. Depending on wear, you can even swap sections around to extend their lifespan. We provide a 10-year warranty but expect it to last much longer with an effective cleaning regime in this type of environment. You can also cut the planks to shape easily, for quicker and easier installation. Making them more adaptable for a variety of design forms, or neatly fitting around tricky nooks and crannies. Flexible Design ChoicesINTRAflex XT lends itself particularly well to inset designs because each individual unit within the plank system co-ordinated with products using the same aluminium profile. You can see other examples of its creative use in Newgate Street and The Plimsoll Building. INTRAflex is a heavy-duty system suitable for high and heavy traffic locations, so it's equally up to the task in transport hubs as commercial offices. With an open or closed construction, it is also suitable for internal or external use depending on the inserts you choose.

INTRAflex XT and INTRAflow were both specified across the various entrance ways within the Battersea Power Station complex. The complex has high footfall areas for the shopping centre and leisure areas, residential apartments and corporate offices. With many doors exposed to Northern Ireland's weather and open for extended periods to help passengers move around easily, the Entrance Matting needed to withstand significant water ingress. All while maintaining stringent safety standards and sustainability goals. Following previous successful projects and a personal recommendation, John McAslan + Partners turned to INTRAsystems back in 2017 to explore options. An Effective CombinationAfter discussing the brief and viewing the early plans, we helped John McAslan + Partners identify INTRAflex XT with an open-construction and silver finish as the most suitable system for the project requirements; performance, sustainability and durability. Brent Civic Centre

INTRAsystems

Designed by Hopkins Architects, Brent Civic Centre was constructed in 2013 as part of a major modernisation and centralisation initiative. It was the first public building to achieve a BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ rating to make it the most sustainable building of its kind in the UK. Housing Brent’s civic, public and administrative functions, including community hall, library and civic chamber, alongside retail space and landscaped gardens, the 40,000 m² building provides a modern hub for the local community. To ensure safety and maintain interiors, the soaring, naturally lit foyer utilises our INTRAform DM entrance matting system. Read more...

Project DetailsSytem: INTRAflex XTSpecification: INTRAflex XT with Waterlogic drainage systemClient: Brighton 3TsArchitect: Building Design Partnership (BDP)Installer: SDS MattingLocation: Royal Sussex County Hospital, BrightonHigh-Performance Entrance Matting for State-of-the-art HospitalThis pioneering project is a radical upgrade of Brighton Hospital's 200-year-old site. Named the 3Ts as it includes trauma, tertiary and teaching care. Visionary architects and long-term client, BDP specified our INTRAflex XT systems with integrated Waterlogic drainage for the first stage - the main entrance building, The Louisa Martindale Building. Approximately eight by ten metres, the Entrance Mat extends from a covered external area, through a large revolving door, side doors and into the internal lobby. Performance was the main objective as the building welcomes over 100,000 patients a year, plus staff and visitors for seven theatres, 15 isolation suites, 28 wards and service departments.Focusing on FunctionalityAs a premier healthcare setting, functionality was paramount. The Entrance Mat efficiently removes water and dirt to prevent slips and keeps visitors safe. The zone 1, external section of the Entrance Mat uses INTRAflex XT with an open construction over the INTRAmatting Waterlogic drainage system to remove rainwater and dirt efficiently (it holds 75 litres per m2 which is then channelled into a waste water drainage system). Combined with hard-wearing and weatherproof rubber inserts, it scrubs and scrapes off large dirt particles before traffic meets the zone 2. From the large revolving door into the lobby, INTRAflex XT is used in its closed construction format, with fibre inserts, for greater comfort and further moisture absorption. A Higher StandardAnother key consideration was strength. The building's multiple-floor-height entrance is fully glazed with services installed at height. Specific access equipment and Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs) help maintain the building, so we checked their details to ensure the Entrance Mat could efficiently handle the load stress. The Waterlogic system is extremely strong, and we construct it with reinforced supports so that the chosen matting can easily cope with extreme loads. Manufactured to perfectly fit the matwell, the Waterlogic base curves around the 5m wide revolving door. Considering AccessibilityServing such a variety of people with specific needs, accessibility was another important part of the specification. BDP chose materials and finishes for DDA compliance. We have Light Reflecting Values (LRV) for each of our products, so BDP could easily choose which materials were best for contrasting with other flooring and building substrates. We test all our Entrance Matting products for slip ratings, and to ensure that they are wheel and heel proof. The zone 2, internal performance Entrance Matting is a closed construction with fibre inserts to scrape and remove finer debris. The dirt retained in the matting is easy to remove with regular vacuuming as part of the hospital’s stringent cleaning regime.A Proven Healthcare PartnerHealthcare settings have their own specific challenges and demand high standards for Entrance Matting. BDP has worked with us for years across a wide range of sectors, including healthcare, so trust our products and service to deliver their exacting standards. We’re now finalising the Entrance Matting for the second stage of the 3Ts redevelopment at Royal Sussex County Hospital.

Brighton i360

INTRAsystems

The design and engineering of British Airways i360 is as impressive as it is innovative. Such an innovative attraction needs to stay attractive whilst maintaining safety of its tourists. Did you know that 90% of slip accidents occur on wet or contaminated floors? By not effectively trapping dirt, cleaning costs can skyrocket to £600-£1000 per kg of soil removed. This can often lead to a reception that is unattractive. At INTRAsystems we have always believed that Entrance Matting is the first line of defence in preventing the ingress of dirt and moisture into the building.
