Troldtekt’s acoustic wood wool panels have helped interior design company Ambiente to win Nohrcon’s annual Danish ‘Office Building of the Year Award’ with its own office in Skanderborg, Denmark.  Created in collaboration with architect Ardess, the new 11,500sqm headquarters for this well-known interior design and exhibition stand company has unique features set within a raw and rustic environment and behind a minimalistic black steel façade. The centrepiece of the office is a 1,000sqm open external atrium which is overlooked by every department to develop a sense of bonding and equality between the tradespeople in production to the designers and sales team at their desks.  “The goal was to create something unique where high ceilings and spaciousness within a raw concrete frame would be a source of inspiration for both employees and clients,” says Ambiente owner and creative director Michael Skjodt. Consequently, the decor and spaces are designed to release creative ideas and build them up together with the customer.  The result is raw concrete floors and walls with 6.5m high ceilings contrasting against 18 staggered White City cubes, as they are called. These bright white rooms are used to stimulate creativity from meetings, exhibitions, showrooms and offices.  Black painted Troldtekt acoustic ceiling panels which have a natural rugged and uncomplicated appearance are used throughout the open areas and, when combined with long and heavy curtains, give the space an intimate and quiet atmosphere. When architects Haworth Tompkins relocated after over a decade in Kentish Town – the move allowed the studio to combine their main office and nearby satellite office into one new larger space close to the Barbican. The move provided the perfect opportunity to make the new office a showcase of the latest materials and digital infrastructure. Keen to keep to their ethos of reuse, recycle and reduce, many of the original fixtures and fittings were repurposed to make them suitable for the new office. Facilities also include personal lockers, bike storage and shower rooms to encourage sustainable commuting. The new studio accommodates 110 staff on site, coupled with digitally equipped meeting rooms, display areas showing architectural models and large open plan areas including hot desks, meeting spaces and break out areas. The practice also hosts many public outreach events, such as the London Festival of Architecture, Architects Declare Sustainability events and various exhibitions. The BBC TV Centre at Wood Lane London is world renowned for its television output over many years. Completed in February last year, much of the interior was extensively redesigned by HOK architects, with refurbishment and construction carried out by the BDL Group, one of the largest specialist dry-lining contractors in the UK. One of the key factors to ensure that noise was kept to a minimum and reverberation time reduced. London’s so-called Loom building is full of stories that unravel and offer glimpses into its rich history. It is not often that architects, in this case Duggan Morris, have the opportunity to design a perfect link between both modern and ancient. One of the architects’ solutions was to use Troldtekt 2000 x 600mm natural wood wool acoustic ceiling panels. These provide an attractive link between the different spaces in this together with reusing many original old materials to restore attractive life into this previously neglected space.

Bedales School is set in an area of outstanding natural beauty on the edge of the South Downs National Park in Hampshire. Its new Art and Design building designed by architects Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios has a strong sense of countryside drawing references from traditional agricultural buildings by creating a series of connected barn forms. The design of spaces for children is intriguing because of the permanent influence it can have on them. Troldekt’s wood wool acoustic ceiling panels have made a major contribution to the Enterprise Centre at the University of East Anglia. The new Junior School for the Girls Day School Trust Notting Hill & Ealing High School designed by Architects Hawkins\Brown is a true lesson in sustainability. Rated BREEAM Excellent, the school serves as a model of combining best modern building practices with academic excellence.The school worked closely with Hawkins\Brown and were keen the building represented an opportunity to empower the students with knowledge and skills to contribute positively towards the green transition and instil optimism through actionable change. Targeting net zero in operation, the site includes 14 new junior school classrooms, additional sixth form classrooms, library and specialist teaching spaces for music, art, science and computing. The addition of a science garden and forest school area add to the inside-outside learning experience.Anderson Acoustics were appointed to provide acoustic advice for the redevelopment of the site which included large, pitched roofs and large expanses of windows and hard surfaces. Oakmeadow Primary School is one of the first Passivhaus primary schools in the UK. Designed by Architype architects, the school has a lightweight, super insulated timber frame to achieve Passivhaus airtightness, with a simplified load bearing stud wall, wrapped by an additional layer of insulation created by Larson trusses. A major contribution to the comfort of the occupants is the use of Troldtekt ceiling tiles in both classrooms and the sports hall. The tiles not only reduce reverberation time but also offer high performance acoustic absorption in areas, such as the teaching areas which need to be calm, studious & healthy.

Patalab architects were commissioned to convert an intriguing building off Acton High Street in the London Borough of Ealing into a new certified school for children with Special Education Needs and one with a special focus on pupils with severe autism. Snowflake School is an Ofsted-outstanding teaching environment in a building which was originally a purpose-built hall for the Salvation Army before being turned into an animation studio. Inserted steelwork mezzanines over a herringbone-floored hall contributed to a mishmash of conversions. Given the nature of the school and the links between autism and noise sensitivity, Troldtekt’s acoustic wood wool panelling was specified to minimise sound reverberation and to promote a healthy sound environment and calmness.Project Architect Sophie Fuller explains “The double-height central space works really well as the school’s main hall. The need for more assisted-living and retirement accommodation continues to rise to match the ever-growing ageing population whether it’s to combat the cost of living independently, downsizing, increased care needs or just a sense of community and freedom.Care Homes and Day Centres play an important role in our society and can improve the quality of life for its users through an increased sense of security and to combat isolation. Seven Dials Market is a market and dining space occupying the 19th Century Thomas Neal’s Warehouse – a former banana storage warehouse. Set in the heart of London’s Covent Garden, the market is a concoction of the best independent street food and drinks vendors in London. Seven Dials brings together a diverse group of food businesses from around the world, all with roots in the city's streets.When owners Kerb wanted to transform the space, they appointed award-winning architects Stiff+Trevillion to redesign the space and turn it into 23,680 square metres of food, drink and entertainment space. Centred around a large open atrium under a large skylight, the two-floor market now boasts a rich and diverse collection of 20 independent food and drink businesses offering cuisine from around the world and serving 2.4 million visitors annually.Part of the Stiff+Trevillion’s design was to draw on the building’s history as a former banana storage warehouse and the resultant space is contemporary in style yet rooted in its heritage. The design of the building retains many original features carefully restored and refurbished including cast iron beams and brickwork arches on a flagstone floor. As with all large, open spaces covered with hard surfaces, controlling acoustics was essential in providing a comfortable space for staff and visitors. An intriguing new Milan styled Italian café has opened on Essex Road, Islington designed by well-known Italian studio Vudafieri-Saverino Partners. The 240 sqm ‘Latteria’ is inspired by Milanese culture and style with a warm and informal atmosphere in white and red. London Zoo is one of the UK’s best-known tourist attractions and the world’s oldest scientific zoo. Opened in 1838, it now houses nearly 20,000 animals. The new Terrace Restaurant by SHH architects has tripled the dining space to 700 covers. The Folkehuset Absalon in Copenhagen is an excellent example of the growing trend towards multi-use and multi-purpose cultural social centres. Designed to promote community cohesion with a flexible space to accommodate a variety of activities and services, multi-purpose venues are used to support everything from sport, leisure and learning through to childcare, heritage, culture, elderly needs, tourism, pop-up shops and events. This award-winning project by Arcgency architects has taken a former Church with its high ceilings and transformed it into a flexible community centre with ‘living-room’ feel.

Social trends in sports are changing. Urban activities traditionally consigned to the urban landscape are now being embraced by the mainstream and incorporated into the interior sports environment. Sports such as parkour, street football and street basketball have been adopted by leisure companies to attract younger members and to keep people moving. This new encouragement in sports, movement and activity, has led to a new generation of buildings offering urban activities in a raw industrial environment and which require specialist architectural innovation. The National Memorial Arboretum (NMA) in Staffordshire is winner of the Large Visitor Attraction category in the Visit England Awards for Excellence 2018. Designed by Glenn Howells Architects (GHA), this stunning building is the UK’s year-round centre of Remembrance - a spiritually uplifting place which honours the fallen, recognises service and sacrifice and fosters pride in the UK. A significant new building project has recently been completed at one of the National Trust’s most popular properties in Hampshire, Mottisfont Abbey. The new development, situated on the banks of the River Test, uses Troldtekt natural wood wool panels to improve the entrance facilities at this historic priory and country estate - visited annually by over 250,000 people. ‘Autobarn’ is an unusual build comprising an elegant five-bay garage and accompanying workshop sitting within the grounds of a Grade-II listed 18th-century home in Somerset.Designed by Bindloss Dawes Architects, the brief was to create a garage with an adjoining workshop to house the client’s classic car collection. Although sustainable building is on the rise, large quantities of the harmful substances in some building materials still manage to slip through into new and refurbished buildings.
