Application

Suitable for both new build and refurbishment applications, with option of using a root-resistant capping sheet for green roof scenarios.

Description

Bitumen inverted roof system, incorporating inverted insulation and torch-on bitumen capping sheet, with self-adhered bitumen underlayer. Bauderflex Roof System is suitable for a variety of applications on both new build and refurbishment projects and can be used in warm, cold and inverted roof scenarios. Includes the option of using a root resistant cap sheet, making this waterproofing system suitable for green roof situations. For green roof situations, see Bauderflex Green.

Bauder Inverted Roof systems should be ballasted/ landscaped to prevent wind uplift and/ or floatation. Type, thickness, weight of landscaping should be agreed with manufacturer per bespoke project basis.

Flame-Free/ Safe to Torch Zone Detailing:

Bauder was the first manufacturer to pledge its support to the Safe2Torch initiative, introduced by the National Federation of Roof Contractors (NRFC) in July 2017. The flame-free detailing designs specifically deliver secure and safe installations in the vicinity of combustible construction materials located on, or connected to, the roof such as timber substrates or upstands; abutments to cladding, roof tiles, slates or thatch; or debris such as dry leaf material that is at risk from ignition.

Flame-free detailing can be integrated into all bituminous waterproofing solutions to give versatile, safe installation techniques for all roof types, site conditions and budgets.

The waterproofing flashing should be turned up by at least 150 mm around features such as rooflights, parapets and service pipes passing through the roof, detail work to upstands, edge details, flashings, etc. The membrane should not be taken up in one piece. Consult manufacturer for further information.

Features and benefits of Flame-Free/ Safe to Torch Zone Detailing:

  • Complete range of self-adhesive bitumen membranes.
  • Installation follows industry best practice and conforms to BS 8217: 2005.
  • 4.2 mm-thick elastomeric KSO SN and KSO P-SN cap sheets.
  • Hot air welding of membrane laps in the flame-free zone.
  • Can comply with Building Regulations Approved Document B – Fire Safety.
  • Manufactured to BS EN 13707: 2004 Reinforced Bitumen Membrane Sheets.
  • Reduces risk of fire caused by installation.
  • Practical solution so that installation programme times are achievable.
  • Robust waterproofing without compromising system longevity.

Activator-Primer (Canister) APR01 - Black.

Guidance for specification option:

Synthetic rubber resin-based primer, developed to provide the necessary preparation of substrates prior to the installation of self-adhesive and torch-applied membranes. The spray application offers improved film thickness speed of application (by up to 50% over roller applied products) and quick drying in a matter of minutes.

  • Coverage: approximately 96 g/m² (300 mm-wide spray one coat, 192 g/m² two coats). Two coats may be required for very porous substrates.
  • Application temperature: +5 to +30°C.
  • Drying time (at 10°C): 5–10 minutes.
  • Colour: black.
  • Recoat time if left exposed: four hours.
  • Suitable substrates: oriented strand board (OSB); plywood; timber; concrete; lightweight concrete or cementitious materials; metal; Bauder self-adhesive underlayers; existing asphalt and bitumen membranes; polyisocyanurate (PIR) insulation.
  • Non-suitable substrates: mica-finished surfaces (e.g. KSD FBS); laminated paper-foil faced insulation; expanded polystyrene (EPS) or extruded polystyrene (XPS) insulations; BauderROCK or mineral wool insulation; BauderGLAS or cellular glass insulation; copper; thermoplastic waterproofing membranes.

Attachment

Loose laid (and suitably ballasted).

Guidance for specification option:

  • Setting out: loose lay insulation directly over the capping sheet to brick pattern with staggered joints. Minimize cutting and avoid small pieces at perimeters and penetrations. Dependent upon the total thickness required, it may be necessary to construct the insulation using two layers of board. The manufacturer/supplier can advise on the available combination options.
  • Joints: butt together.
  • Loading over inverted insulation (minimum): ballast (landscaping) should be installed onto the Bauder WFRL Membrane (Water Flow Reducing Layer) to a minimum depth required to achieve a permanent minimum 80 kg/m² and load which prevents wind uplift and flotation of the insulation in high winds and/or heavy rainfall.
  • Additional loading at perimeters: on high buildings in more exposed areas, wind uplift may be a problem and in these instances paving slab ballast must be considered. Paving slabs should be a minimum of 50 mm thick. The slabs should be laid on paving slab supports of minimum 175 mm diameter (or equivalent base area).

All final details must to be confirmed with Bauder before proceeding.

System accessories

Not required.

Bauder lighting conductors.

Guidance for specification option:

Lightning conductor clips are a specially designed secure clip that allows for movement.

  • Bauder Lightning conductor clips – Type 4: polyvinyl chloride (PVC)-coated or bare conductor.

Bauder rainwater outlets.

Guidance for specification option:

Bauder has a range of insulated or stainless-steel rainwater outlets.

The insulated outlets can be used for maintaining thermal continuity at drainage points. Suitable for warm, cold and inverted roof construction. The BRE Certified (report no. HPR357-303748) high thermal value of the rigid foam body prevents condensation from forming on the underside of the outlet body.

Designed for use when connecting to conventional drainage systems and is suitable for both new build and refurbishment projects. Outlets are included in the Bauder waterproofing system guarantee as they are integrated components.

Flow rate figures (where applicable) are based on BS EN 12056:3:2000, typically taken using a 35 mm header of water including leaf grille:

  • Bauder Bitumen Vertical Outlet DN70: Insulated internal outlet, 7.1 L/s.
  • Bauder Bitumen Vertical Outlet DN150: Insulated internal outlet, 7.2 L/s.
  • Bauder Bitumen Letterbox Parapet Outlet DN 205 including stainless-steel leaf guard, 2.02 L/s.
  • Bauder Bitumen Parapet Outlet DN 100 including stainless-steel leaf guard, 1.06 L/s.
  • Bauder Bitumen Vertical Refurb Outlet DN70, designed to ensure the maximum flow rate of the existing downpipe is not exceeded.
