SuDS Sand Subsoil

A yellow, dry, non-plastic, and non-calcareous sand, exhibiting a single grain structure. It was also noted to be free of stones, unusual odours, and any visible signs of contamination such as foreign materials or pernicious weeds.

Laboratory tests revealed that the sand was slightly alkaline, non-saline, and contained a low level of organic matter. The soil demonstrated high permeability and sufficient porosity, which are crucial factors for effective drainage and root development.

Based on these findings, the horticultural and geotechnical properties of the sand were deemed appropriate for use as a structural subsoil in tree planting. The combination of its colour, grain composition, chemical properties, permeability, and porosity indicates that it can provide a stable and suitable environment for tree growth. This type of soil offers a solid foundation and facilitates adequate water drainage and nutrient uptake, essential for the health and establishment of trees in landscaped areas.
