Amber Valley Stone was commissioned to manufacture and supply bespoke red precast coloured concrete units for the Forest Road project in Walthamstow. This project, designed by Gort Scott, aimed to provide 90 affordable one-bedroom homes for local first-time buyers. The development is situated on a prominent site opposite Lloyd Park and the William Morris Gallery.Our ContributionAmber Valley Stone produced a range of precast concrete elements, including concaved structural heads, fascia panels, curved beams, columns, and copings. The St Helen & St Katharine Sixth Form Centre is a state-of-the-art education facility that required the use of precast elements both internally and externally to meet its design requirements.The architects, TSH Architects, collaborated with the contractors and Amber Valley Stone to ensure that the precast units met the design specifications and were manufactured and installed with the utmost precision.Challenge:The challenge for Amber Valley Stone was to manufacture and supply high-quality precast units that would meet the strict design requirements of the St Helen & St Katharine Sixth Form Centre.The precast elements needed to be robust and of high quality, with clean and consistent finished faces and corners. A high quality Duchy of Cornwall project called Kew An Lergh (Cornish for Way Close) delivering a range of community benefits including a nursery school, offices, shops and restaurant in three Arts and Crafts style buildings grouped around a landscaped courtyard.Challenge:AVS were appointed to work closely with the Duchy team, architect and engineer to provide product solutions in line with the architect’s design intent for the project, retaining the overall character and design of the intended buildings.Solution:AVS provided a full drawing package including unit design calculations and reinforcement details for all units including provisions for any potential site handling issues prior to delivery of the stone reinforcements. This exciting new green, pedestrian-friendly public space for the city centre involved the most significant changes to a city centre road layout for 15 years. The scheme has attracted over £20m of Government funding and work to transform the look and feel of the area began in August 2020.The redevelopment of the whole Broadmarsh area will drastically improve the city centre once completed, with a new Broadmarsh Car Park and Bus Station, Central Library, Nottingham Castle visitor experience and Nottingham College City Hub and reimagined public realm.Amber Valley Stone was instructed to supply architectural precast seating and step units including curved areas to the Broadmarsh redevelopment.AVS manufactured various samples & mix designs for the landscape architects, Pick Everard, to find the perfect colour and finish to meet their strict criteria.“We have had a very good experience working with Amber Valley. Artform describes the design as weaving a story of craft and sustainability. A celebration of raw interior materials and sculpted exterior design.Amber Valley Stone engaged early in the design of this project with multiple Teams calls, factory and site visits.“Artform appointed Amber Valley Stone to supply the precast concrete sections to the façade of our Garnham Street project in North London. They were incredibly helpful throughout, including the design stage, and we were even able to visit and see the manufacturing process.
