LSA Projects Ltd

Product: Gustafs Panel System and Gustafs Linear RibsLSA Projects supplied over 1000m2 of Gustafs Panels and more than 450m2 of Gustafs Ribs to the refit of the Royal College of Surgeons flagship facility in central London in 2021. The historic premises was originally completed and gifted to the college in the early 19th century as home to the Hunterian Museum in addition to a teaching facility for the association. The building has undergone regular regenerations to keep the facility up to date as well as reparations after damage in World War 2.The 2021 renovation project at the headquarters in Lincoln’s Inn Fields was intended as a major overhaul to the day-to-day use of the spaces as well as the environmental impact of energy efficiency of the building. Architects chose to maintain the original building façade including the exterior columns and portico whilst transforming the inside of the building to meet modern environmental standards for insulation, energy use, and sustainability. Central to the redevelopment is the addition of versatile event and conference facilities including the Lumely Library and The View which can host and cater for up to 300 delegates.Internally, designers chose to use natural timber products throughout for a timeless, enduring design while maintaining the traditional feel of the building. Gustafs Panels and Ribs were specified to clad the walls surrounding the central atrium space as well as in the main conference suite and ground floor lobby area. Bespoke panel and rib solutions were designed in collaboration with LSA to include hidden storage details within the walls as well as recessed alcoves displaying a collection of historic sculptures and paintings. Both Gustafs products used included acoustic treatments. The panel system areas used nano perforations which provide acoustic class B control with 0.5mm surface holes in the face veneer and high performance ‘sound chamber’ perforations in the gypsum panel core. The ribs installed elsewhere used standardised mounting system to achieve 50mm centres between ribs. This mounting format achieves acoustic class C with minimal mounting build-up.All timber elements used in this renovation scheme were required to meet strict standards for sustainable and responsible timber sourcing. The veneers for both Gustafs Panel System and Gustafs Linear Ribs for this project were supplied with FSC certification.

The panel system has a recommended 50 Year Design Life and a track record in the UK alone of 20 year old projects (and counting) owing to the unique solid panel base provided by the gypsum particleboard which eliminates the risk of panels moving and warping over time as you would expect to see with a solid timber or MDF cored product. The panels are also completely non-combustible achieving Euroclass A2,s1-d0 for Fire Resistance (exceeding the criteria for Class 0) for the whole product build-up from the paper panel backing to the facing veneer and lacquer.Across the space 3 different timber finishes were specified to the project: white washed Oak, natural Oak and black stained Ash. The range of timbers helps to add to the depth and texture of the material and to break-up the finish between spaces and floors whist keeping a consistent theme across the library’s cladding. A mixture of plain and SM5 mini slotted acoustic panels were used to give some acoustic absorption to the atrium space, SM5 perforations mini slot perforations at 5mm x 20mm provide 15% open area and achieve acoustic class C which is perfect for light acoustic control across all frequencies. In addition to the traditional wall and ceiling Gustafs cladding, panels were used to cover pillars and beams within the library. Each piece was made to measure at the factory to ensure a perfect fit using Gustaf’s unique CAPAX profile system for invisible installation.

Royal Horticultural Society Welcome Building – Wisley, Surrey.

LSA Projects Ltd

Finished in June 2019 ready for the Spring and Summer seasons, the Welcome Building is the new £20m addition to the flagship RHS (Royal Horticultural Society) gardens in Wisley, Surrey. The installation which includes over 2,500m2 of linear rib ceilings is already a strong contender for our signature project of 2019!The building was officially opened on the 10th of June by celebrity ambassador for the RHS Alan Titchmarsh, alongside TV Baker Mary Berry and Director General of the Royal Horticultural Society Sue Biggs. The Welcome Building is the first of 3 major works to the 240-acre garden, totalling an impressive £70m investment for the attraction. The 5,000m2 Welcome Hub is home to modern, state of the art, improved visitor facilities including a grand multi-functional arrivals hall, 100 cover a la carte restaurant and cafe, and a huge shop with an extensive range of gardening books, gifts and homewares.Being leaders in the ‘Greening Great Britain’ movement, the client looked to keep the project as environmentally responsible as possible; working to the Considerate Constructor program the build process aimed to respect the local community by contributing to the local economy and minimising any negative impacts of the works. The scheme also encourages contractors to consider the long-term sustainability of the build; by using air source underfloor heating and extensive insulation as well as LED lighting throughout, the energy needed for the day-to-day running of the site is greatly reduced. In keeping with the natural and ‘green’ ethos of the RHS the scheme architect’s at KSS specified linear ribs for the pitched ceilings across the space, the system is comprised of a solid gypsum core rib wrapped in a choice of natural or faux timber veneer and delivered with a unique and versatile ‘easy-up’ installation system. The linear rib solution allows for versatility of installation; the standard installation system allows for flexibility in gaps between allowing specifiers control over the acoustic performance of the system. By design The Euroclass B-s1,d0 (for fire resistance) gypsum core of the ribs gives a secure base for the industrially glued veneer or foil finish as well as being a stable material for cutting and ensuring the ribs will never warp over time.Sustainable sourcing is another important factor to be considered in modern building, when working with natural timber products production and supply chain accountability is paramount. FSC® (Forestry Stewardship Council®) product certification is the global standard for responsible timber sourcing. All of the natural Oak timber and veneer used on the 18,000 linear metres of linear ribs at RHS Wisley were delivered as either FSC Mix (veneer) or FSC Controlled Wood (solid timber) certified for meeting the relevant chain of custody requirements of the timber in addition to continuing to commit to the operational values outlined by the council.
