Selectaglaze Secondary Glazing: The Comet Hotel

The Comet Hotel is located in Hertfordshire at the junction of the Barnet by-pass with St Albans Road.
Formerly known as the Ramada Hatfield, the Comet’s multimillion pound refurbishment which began in 2017 is now complete.
The hotel had retained the building’s original crittal sash windows but this did not provide the required level of noise insulation to a number of the guestrooms, restaurant and function spaces for meetings and networking events.
St Albans based Selectaglaze installed 104 secondary glazed units, with a cavity between the primary windows and the secondary units to improve noise insulation.

Grosvenor Britain & Ireland has successfully transformed a Grade II Listed Hotel into three of the most sustainable, energy efficient apartments for rent in the UK. The apartments provide natural ventilation and thermal insulation, accomplished using the most recent engineering systems and low carbon technologies.119 Ebury Street has now become the first Listed building to receive a BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ rating in the UK for its proposed design.

Historic Banqueting House, Whitehall, lies at the heart of the tourist trail with Buckingham Palace and Westminster Abbey a short walk away and contains the only surviving in situ ceiling painting series by Sir Peter Paul Rubens. Selectaglaze's secondary glazing provided a significant level of noise reduction and essential UV filtering to the Thomson Specification approved by the National Gallery, V&A and others.

With a refurbishment budget of £34m, the 1830s iconic masterpiece will once more become the performance centre of the city. However, the journey from faded glory to world class concert venue was hardly straightforward and took the combined expertise and ingenuity of main contractor, Wates Construction and Selectaglaze, the country's leading secondary glazing specialist.

The Grade II* Listed Blue Mills in Witham, Essex was recorded in Domesday as the water mill at Benton Hall, a subsidiary manor of Blunts in Witham.
The owners have lived in Blue Mills for 20 years and reached out to Selectaglaze for advice on secondary glazing treatments for their primary windows; a mixture of timber sash windows, fixed lights and inward/outward opening casements. 22 windows were treated using a number of window styles: fixed light, vertical sliding and side-hung casements.

Located next to St Pauls Cathedral, stands the Grade II* Listed Chapter house. Designed by Sir Christopher Wren and his son and built between 1712 and 1714, this elegant red brick building has a chequered history. With views overlooking the Cathedral, the Chapter house offers a unique space for fine dining and exclusive receptions.

The newly redeveloped Downing Place United Reformed Church in Cambridge required Selectaglaze secondary glazing for thermal insulation and improved energy efficiency. The Church was built in 1891 and stands within the Historic Core Conservation Area.56 units were installed; comprising of four Series 45 side hung casements in the Chapel and 52 Series 46 slimline fixed lights installed in the Nave. A timber mullioned cartwheel frame was crafted to securely hold the secondary glazing in a large circular window in the Nave. Seven bespoke Series 46 fixed light segments were made for it and glazed with 6mm toughened glass.

Ham Yard Hotel is situated in one of the most vibrant areas of London, from an exciting nightlife of bars and restaurants to boutique shops and characterful cafes. Firmdale Hotels approached Selectaglaze for help in addressing noise ingress and introduced a secondary unit to the inside of primary windows, reducing noise and providing thermal benefits. Ham Yard Hotel has been independently verified by BREEAM, which awarded it a BREEAM 'Excellent rating'.

To protect exhibits housed within this magnificent Georgian building, Selectaglaze designed and installed single hinged casements incorporating Anti-UV glazing and multi-point locking accredited to “Secured by Design”. Other design considerations included a paint finish matching the surrounding décor and maintenance of clean lines via flush hinges and a flush lock. The secondary glazing blends imperceptibly with the monumental sash windows with no additional sight lines to mar the spectacular views.
The double window system also proves high levels of sound insulation and the inclusion of a low emissivity coating to the glass markedly reduces heat loss.

Having previously worked on a number of projects at the historic Grade II Listed Jesus College buildings, the College’s request was to refurbish the primary windows in keeping with their original features. With the most recent project, Selectaglaze has covered more of the spacious college grounds and focused their efforts on the Master’s Lodges, Professors’ and Fellows’ rooms which are situated in the First Court and South Gate Tower.

Working with award winning architects Hawkins Brown Associates LLP and Main contractor Osborne Construction, 63 secondary glazed units have been installed by Selectaglaze during the remodelling and refurbishment of the Grade II Listed Plumstead Library, to make it more thermally efficient and to create quieter spaces for the local community user groups.
A number of styles were installed across the library, including two large sweeping bow windows framing the entrance, to upgrade the single glazed metal frames primary windows which could not be changed. All sightlines were matched, and the secondary glazing allowed full access for cleaning and maintenance.

Following years of neglect, the Grade II Listed Fellowship, Bellingham - London has undergone a huge transformation and in June 2019 reopened as the ‘Fellowship and Star’.
Harking back to its history as a music and entertainment venue, it has a new cinema, theatre, concert space, pub; and is also home to charity ‘Lewisham Music’.
To prevent the ingress of traffic noise from a busy thoroughfare outside and to prevent noise outbreak from the concerts and music lessons, 32 secondary glazed acoustically insulating units were manufactured and installed by Selectaglaze, to improve the performance of the original crittal windows.

The £226m, 513 single bedroomed hospital features a dedicated Women and Children’s unit with a Level 2 Neo-Natal Unit providing special and high dependency care.
The imposing primary windows have been supplemented with secondary units providing better internal environment control, offering additional guarding and allowing for remote controlled privacy blinds. Together with main contractor Laing O’Rourke, Selectaglaze developed a design that met all criteria. Most windows were treated with Series 40 hinged and fixed panels featuring a chamfer bead to avoid dust ledges. Glazed with 8.8mm laminated glass, the units meet the required safety levels.
