Primer for use on new and remedial plywood or OSB/3 (field areas only): Bauder Activator-Primer (Canister), APR01-Black.

Guidance for specification option:

Use for new and remedial Plywood / OSB/3 (Note: Plywood / OSB/3 decks will always require a carrier membrane installed prior to the LiquiTOP Waterproofing System).

Primer to be applied to the flat roof substrate that are to be covered by the Carrier Membrane.

Bauder Activator-Primer (Canister), APR01-Black:

Synthetic rubber resin-based primer, developed to provide the necessary preparation of substrates prior to the installation of self-adhesive membranes. The spray application offers improved film thickness speed of application (by up to 50% over roller applied products) and quick drying in a matter of minutes.

  • Coverage: Approximately 96 g/m² (300 mm wide spray one coat, 192 g/m² two coats). Two coats may be required for very porous substrates.
  • Application temperature: +5 to +30°C.
  • Drying time (at 10°C): 5–10 minutes.
  • Colour: Black.
  • Recoat time if left exposed: Four hours.

Suitable substrates: Oriented strand board (OSB); plywood; timber; concrete; lightweight concrete or cementitious materials; metal; Bauder self-adhesive underlayers; existing asphalt and bitumen membranes; polyisocyanurate (PIR) insulation.

Non-suitable substrates: Mica finished surfaces (e.g. KSD FBS); Laminated paper-foil faced insulation; expanded polystyrene (EPS) or extruded polystyrene (XPS) insulations; BauderROCK or mineral wool insulation; BauderGLAS or cellular glass insulation; copper; thermoplastic waterproofing membranes.

Application:

Purpose: Substrate primer to seal and prepare dry surfaces of a variety of common substrate material prior to the application of Bauder self-adhesive bitumen membranes.

Before application: All surfaces must be dry, clean and free from dust, dirt, oil, grease and loose material.

Application method: Spray-applied to provide even and full coverage. Avoid pooling. Never attempt torching within 10 minutes of primer application, even if the surface appears dry.

Application rate:

  • 300 mm-wide spray.
  • Coverage: Approx. 96 g/m².
  • Two coats may be required for very porous substrates.
  • Application temperature: +5 to +30°C
  • Drying time: Approx. 5–10 minutes, dependent upon ambient temperature and material porosity.
  • Coats: Fully bond. Allow volatiles to dry off thoroughly between coats.
  • Re-application: Necessary after four hours’ exposure if waterproofing has not yet been applied, to maintain adhesion performance.

Caution: Use only outdoors in well ventilated areas or with respiratory apparatus and keep away from all sources of ignition. Take necessary precautions to avoid the solvent vapour from entering the buildings ventilation system.

  • Installation is to be carried out by Bauder-approved contractors in accordance with the specification and guidelines. Please consult the Bauder Technical Department.

Preparation of metals:

  • Return metal to a clean, bright condition. Ideally steelwork should be prepared in accordance with ISO 12944-4 or BS 7079. Where blasting is not applicable, wire brushing or grinding etc. may be acceptable although it will be more difficult to obtain the desired condition by these methods. All loose scale or rust must be removed.
  • Galvanized surfaces may be primed after suitable preparation and adhesion testing, especially where the surface is weathered or dull. Bright galvanizing will need to be degreased and treated with a proprietary mordant solution before priming. Remove any dust or oxidization from non-ferrous metals and abrade before priming. Lead should be prepared in accordance with health and safety guidance: for advice on methodology contact the HSE.

Preparation of non-metallic surfaces:

  • Plastics, coatings, volatile bitumen, etc. should be clean, dry, sound and free from grease. Hard materials should be abraded to provide a key. Adhesion and compatibility tests should be carried out on all non-metal substrates to confirm compatibility.
  • Adhesion tests should be conducted on all non-ferrous and non-metallic surfaces to ensure the suitability of LiquiTOP Epoxy Primer and the subsequent LiquiTOP PU system.

Ensure surfaces to be primed are clean and dry and free from stripping agents, grease, dirt, debris or other contaminants.

Pour contents of Part B tin into Part A tin and mix thoroughly for 2–3 minutes until streak free and completely mixed. Apply by brush or lambs-wool roller. Leave primer to dry for 2–4 hours before the area is overlaid or adhered too, depending on ambient temperature.

Not required.

Guidance for specification option:

IMPORTANT NOTE: No primer required for:

  • Hard plastics, PVC-P, mineral surface felt and non-absorbent asphalt (subject to adhesion testing).
  • KLH/ timber decks (primer to upstands and details only), no primer required to field areas, as this is covered by BauderFLEX TA 600 random nailed layer.

Manufacturer guidance

Select suitable primer for the deck/ substrate type.

Substrate Repairs and Filling – Liquid Applied Areas:

After priming: SUBSTRATE REPAIRS AND FILLING – LIQUID APPLIED AREAS to be applied after priming:

  • Bauder LiquiPASTE: Minor indentations, cracks and voids;
  • Bauder LiquiPASTE MORTAR: Larger indentations;
  • Bauder LiquiPAVE RF MORTAR: Extensive areas of substrate depressions - Cryl RS 240: Cementitious substrates and Asphalt substrates.

Refer to the current relevant Bauder product datasheet.

Application:

Add catalyst at the rate indicated on the container (except RS 240). In the case of Bauder LiquiPASTE MORTAR and LiquiPAVE RF MORTAR, catalyst must be added before adding the filler. Apply catalyzed resin using a suitable smoothing trowel and allow to cure for a minimum of one hour.
