CLT Assembly and Installation

The large KLH® solid wood panels can usually be installed
easily and using very few tools. The fully packaged
assembly set is delivered directly to the construction site
by lorry or container. The relevant installation company
(usually a wood construction firm) will check and accept
the delivery. The individual components are assembled
and screwed together by using appropriate lifting gear.
Compared to other construction materials, such as bricks,
concrete or steel, KLH® building shells take much less
time to be assembled. Follow-up work can start immediately after the components have been assembled, since this is a dry form of construction that does not require
any drying time that would otherwise need to be taken
into consideration.

CLT Lifting Systems with EC Declaration of Conformity

This brochure is intended to provide an overview of lifting systems that have become established for the installation of KLH® - CLT. The basis for use is either the EC Declarations of Conformity obtained by KLH for lifting equipment installed in the factory or the operating instructions of the respective manufacturers for lifting equipment installed on site (please always use the latest documents from the respective websites and inform us of any deviations from this brochure, for example due to updates). Please observe the country-specific safety regulations for all systems and ensure that the prescribed personal protective equipment and construction site equipment are used. The type and position of the lifting equipment is determined and ordered by the customer.

More than 20 years ago, when the first residential building was constructed according to the passive house
criteria in Kranichstein, Germany, the general public
would not have believed that this concept would become
a legally-required minimum standard in the not so distant future. Comments like “That‘s like living in a plastic
bag!” or “The expenditure, the costs ... that‘ll never be
worth it!” were the rule rather than the exception.
However, increasing energy costs, a shortage of raw
materials and global warming caused rethinking so that
previous rejections have been replaced by interested
building owners looking for answers and solutions.

Wood is the ideal construction material for sustainable
building. After all, every cubic metre of wood stores the
carbon from approx. one ton of CO2. A house made out of
solid wood thus stores around 70 tons of CO2. The use of
KLH® solid wood panels for wall and ceiling structures
also provides the advantage that in comparison to other
wood building methods (e.g. the timber frame construction) the construction can mainly be implemented in homogenous layers.

With KLH® solid wood panels it is certainly possible to
create simple and also economical construction systems
for industrial buildings, halls and the like. In combination
with a primary support structure, e.g. made of steel or
laminated timber, even large spans can be bridged
without supporting columns.
The biggest benefit for the building owner can be achieved
if the building reinforcement can be realised by means of
KLH® roof panels and KLH® wall panels. In this case,
the construction can be made without fixed columns
(e.g. mounted reinforced concrete columns) and the
foundation can be implemented in a considerably simpler
design. Particularly when the foundation soil is in a bad
condition, considerable savings are the result.

Numerous residential building projects have already
been built successfully with KLH® solid wood panels
– from detached houses to multi-storey blocks of flats
and even the currently highest solid wood building in the
world with 8 KLH® storeys, located in London.
Besides the static aspects and requirements of constructional physics, the main focus in residential building is on noise protection.
Noise protection requirements vary from one building
project to another. Detached houses usually do not have
any special indoor requirements in this regard, while
partition ceilings and partition walls in multi-storey
buildings have high requirements. In addition, many
European countries have their own, individual, national
requirements.

Users and planners will be able to easily derive projectspecific details with reference to the basic depictions.
The suggested detailed solutions merely represent
recommendations given by the manufacturer.
In principle, KLH® constructions may be combined
with all construction materials available on the market.
For example: you may use various different insulating
materials such as soft wooden fibres, mineral fibres,
cellulose, etc. as well as different façade materials on
back-ventilated façades or rendered façades.
Operating Instructions for KLH CLT Lifting Systems and Declaration of Conformity

Lifting operations using KLH® lifting gear systems with an EC certificate of conformity may only be carried out with
suitable lifting equipment and a suitable hanger.
Use a high capacity lifting device (minimum diameter 10 mm) in accordance with EN 818-2.
Please observe the following procedure for lifting, unloading, interim storing, and assembling:
- Visually inspect the installed one-way lifting loops
- Hook into all installed lifting loops (hook opening to the outside, please refer to illustration)
- Maximum distance between the lifting points 6 m
- Inclination angle of the hanger 45° - 60
