Situated on the edge of Great Ancoats Street, in the Artisan residential complex featuring luxurious water features and tranquil gardens, this project is very close to Piccadilly and the heart of Manchester City Centre. This attractive residential development was part of a remediation project with the aim of upgrading the building to bring it in line with the latest regulations on fire safety. We worked closely with AEW Architects in the design and specification stage of the decking system and worked closely with Insulated Render Systems Scotland Ltd., who carried out the installation. As is the case with many of our renovation projects, we had to consider the loading criteria required to meet the needs of the balcony walkways, which also formed part of the building’s escape routes.Fire escape routes are required to meet higher loading criteria in accordance with EN 1991-1-1:2002 and the associated National Annex, so our BalcaSmart® Aluminium system was the perfect choice.Designed to fix directly to the balcony steels enabling fast and efficient installation, the BalcaSmart Aluminium system creates safe and secure decked balconies, however challenging the design and performance requirements are. This renovation project presented us with low threshold heights to work with, so we opted for JH50 Joist Hangers to replace the existing timber joists with aluminium ones, which allowed the top of the joist to be flush with the steel frame.Martyn Mounter, Senior Technician – AEW Architects, claimed that this project presented two challenges: balconies with a domestic load and walkways with a heavy load requirement. Martin expressed reassurance with all the technical documentation, certifications, and support provided throughout the project.BalcaSmart Aluminium carries our IGNO mark of assurance, which should provide owners, residents and users with the peace of mind they deserve.

Delivering a stylish, solid and compliant solution for luxury living The challenge: Matching Luxury with Safety in High-End Apartments Berkeley Group St. Edward embarked on an ambitious project: Bankside Gardens, a prestigious development in Reading featuring lakefront apartments and landscaped gardens. Designing balconies and terraces that embodied elegance while adhering to stringent fire safety regulations was paramount. They needed a balcony solution that was stylish, solid and compliant, offering the peace of mind essential for luxury living. Finding a balance between aesthetics and fire safety can be a challenge for specifiers and developers. RYNO's non-combustible decking systems ensure safety compliance without sacrificing design possibilities. The solution: The TerraSmart® Aluminium Decking System - The Perfect Fit St. Edward's search for a reliable supplier led them to RYNO. After a quick and informative discovery call, RYNO recommended the TerraSmart® Aluminium Decking system. This innovative system ticked all the boxes:Unmatched Safety: IGNO Mark of Assurance guaranteed non-combustible performance, providing peace of mind.Third-Party Verification: UKAS accredited testing ensured the system met the highest safety and quality standards.Design Flexibility: A vast array of decking board and component combinations allowed for achieving the desired aesthetic. Two days after the discovery call, our team paid a visit to the Bankside Gardens site office. County Hall - LondonSystem Used - TerraSmart Aluminium IGNOA hub for businesses, a site of attractions and accommodation, London's iconic County Hall is as stunning on the outside as it is on the inside, made even more beautiful thanks to our TerraSmart Aluminium. In order to create a venue for events, Coronado Property Developments Ltd needed a solution for the huge steel floor installed into the lightwell.A Grade II listed building required a decking solution that would complement the overall aesthetics and cater for the increased load requirements: the design load went from a 2.0kN Concentrated Load and 2.5kN/m2 uniformly distributed load (UDL) (used for areas of residential activities, typically used for balconies) to a 4.0kN concentrated load and 5.0kN/m2 UDL (as an area where people may congregate).TerraSmart Aluminium was selected as the ideal system to meet the client's loading criteria. Aluminium decking is a lightweight system when compared to other paving solutions, but very strong. Coronado Property Developments Ltd were very impressed with the solution provided by RYNO and the work done by Pritchard & Pritchard, who installed the system in both lightwells in the building. The TerraSmart Aluminium system featured the ADB80 Deck Board, selected specifically for its increased top surface thickness, delivering superior durability, ADS50 Aluminium Joists to suit the spans of the steel frame underneath, and RD-FR Non-Combustible Joist Support Pedestals for guaranteed supporting strength. The steel grillage was supplied by another manufacturer and installed around the decking to meet the ventilation requirements of the air-conditioning units below. The County Hall was opened over 100 years ago by King George V and it's great to see our systems in London's most versatile, historic building.

A high-profile development project in the heart of Fulham aimed at creating a new residential neighbourhood in and around a beautiful park (King's Road Park), by transforming a redundant gas works site into a brand new sustainable urban quarter. In one of London's most sought-after locations, King's Road Park is literally a stone's throw from King's Road and the River Thames. The project creates over 1,800 homes, restoring two Grade II listed buildings and provides 100,000 sq. ft. of commercial space, featuring bars, restaurants, and offices.RYNO were contacted late in the project by AYM, acting as sub-contractor for this Berkeley Group development, to remedy the combustible decking in the original specification, which was obviously not compliant with fire-safety regulations. The requirement was that all the decking be replaced with a non-combustible wood-grain finish. We worked directly with Berkeley Group to explore non-combustible finish options and put forward onr of our newer porcelain finishes that would match the overall aesthetic appeal of the project. We delivered various samples of finishes and when we deep-dived into the project, as part of our methodology, we determined that it was at risk of wind-uplift. Berkeley Group carried out a wind-uplift assessment, which we facilitated, and confirmed the risk, which we then helped mitigate by proposing kerfed porcelain tiles with our Hidden Wind Uplift fixing. We worked very closely with Berkeley Group throughout the project to address and resolve any challenges, while AYM did a fantastic job installing all the balconies and terraces with our kerfed porcelain and hidden wind-uplift fixing. This has been one of our largest projects to-date, a great success and a prime example of our hidden restraint in action. The Challenge: Overcoming Complex Decking Remediation at Gemini ParkReplacing non-compliant decking on existing structures often presents significant challenges, and the Gemini Park project was no exception. The complexity of the project stemmed from several key factors:Original Design Limitations:The steel frames of the balconies were originally designed to accommodate timber joists, offering flexibility but severely limiting the options for alternative, more compliant materials.Span and Cantilever Requirements:The new decking needed to span large distances and overhang building edges, a requirement that added to the structural demands.Structural Inconsistencies:There were variations in balcony build-ups and discrepancies between the original plans and the actual construction, which further complicated the installation process.Faced with these challenges, the client sought a reliable aluminium decking solution that could meet these stringent requirements while restoring the residents’ peace of mind. The Solution: A Tailored Aluminium Decking SystemTo address the complex challenges presented by the Gemini Park project, the Ryno team developed a customized solution using components from the BalcaSmart Aluminium Decking System. This tailored approach was designed to navigate the project’s specific obstacles effectively.DFB150-DR Aluminium Decking Board:The centre piece of the solution was the innovative DFB150-DR Aluminium Decking Board. This board offers a 1500mm span capacity and integrated drainage within a compact 40mm profile. By allowing perpendicular installation, it significantly reduced the material and labour requirements, making the solution both cost-effective and efficient.T Aluminium Support Rail:The T25 Aluminium Support Rail was selected to replace the existing timber batons. Its design enables quick and secure attachment to steel frames, providing a robust and reliable alternative to timber that meets the necessary compliance standards.DS Aluminium Joist System:To recreate the flexibility of the original timber framing and achieve precise height alignment with door thresholds, the DS Aluminium Joist was used in combination with ADC Joist Support Cleats and JH Joist Hangers. This system offered the necessary adaptability to address the structural inconsistencies and ensure a seamless integration with the existing balcony structures.Achieving Success Through Tailored SolutionsThis tailored approach, informed by RYNO’s extensive experience in decking remediation, successfully transformed the balconies at Gemini Park. The use of the BalcaSmart® Aluminium Decking System not only met the project’s challenging span and cantilever requirements but also overcame the structural inconsistencies with precision. The result was a safe, compliant, and aesthetically pleasing decking solution that restored the residents’ peace of mind and ensured long-term satisfaction. The success of the Gemini Park project highlights the importance of customized solutions in overcoming complex construction challenges and achieving high-quality outcomes in remediation projects.A word from Gemini Park Freehold Ltd“We selected RYNO simply for the solidity of the build. IKEA Hammersmith

RYNO

The Ikea Hammersmith roof terrace project was an exciting one to be involved with as it is a perfect example of when to use a rail-based support system over pedestals.Ikea is a global brand known for its simple design solutions that can be used by everyone. The system – TerraSmart Rail IGNOThere was 6600m2 of the TerraSmart Rail system installed across the terrace to support concrete pavers and porcelain pavers. The lattice make-up of the paving system meant that the insulation layer placed upon the original roof was held down. This framework offered a robust and reliable substructure to the walking surface that will experience a lot of foot traffic. As it is part of our IGNO range, the system is fully non-combustible.The ChallengesThe roof had existing features in the structural slab, which meant that pedestals alone wouldn’t have been able to successfully support the surface, and therefore, a rail system was employed. The rail system allowed easy adjustment to the height creating level plains across the terrace. This system also became an advantage when forming the ramp featured in the design because the TerraSmart Rail can provide non-combustible multidirectional support to the pavers maximising stability and reliability, creating a robust and safe incline a the desired angle. Two different pavers were used as part of the project, a 50mm concrete tile and a 20mm porcelain tile. The transition between the two pavers took place at the same level. The seamless transition between the two finishes was achieved by ‘zoning’ the areas and changing the paving support heights. As it was part of a larger building, the terrace had to account for the expansion and contraction felt over time by differences in the residual temperature. The paving supports had to account for this so that any heat-induced changes would have minimal impact on the safety of the surface. An expansion profile was manufactured to slot between the tiles found over the expansion seam in the insulation to overcome this issue. The expansion profile rises above the gap between pavers and creates an L-shaped cover, hiding any expected movement. Why the project succeededThe success of this project was down to the collaborative effort between everyone involved in the project. The unique features of the project were worked on by the project, innovation and specification teams at Ryno and were complemented by the installation carried out by Greenside Landscapes.

Developed as a great space to live in one of Manchester's best-connected locations, close to the city's shops, restaurants & bars, and next to Manchester Victoria train station, the project comprised two 20 and 25-storey residential towers, which delivered 520 new homes. The architect Sheppard Robson, main contractor VINCI Construction, and installer Deckbuilders, all came together to deliver a great project, that is part of a gateway into the city, featuring fantastic-looking balconies, which we were very happy to secure against the forces of nature: namely wind-uplift.There is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to mitigating the effects of negative pressure on balconies and terraces in high-rise buildings, and in this particular case, we had to fix the paving down to the main structure of the building mechanically, to de-risk against the impact of up to -2.68kPa of suction on the roof.To account for cost and time constraints, the system we used to secure the balconies against wind-uplift was the TerraSmart™ Pedestal system with the addition of a visual wind-uplift mechanical fixing. The tiles were mechanically restrained to the pedestals which, in turn, were mechanically fixed to the concrete deck of the balconies. And the outcome? Balconies secured, the project de-risked against wind-uplift, and the beautiful Quadro Argento Tiles (600x1200x20mm) safely in place for all residents to experience and enjoy. Listen to what our specification manager had to say.If you are specifying a project and want to know how you can mitigate the effects wind-uplift or the impact that occurs as a result of urban canyons, we can help.

Located in the heart of Marylebone, this is a self-contained building in one of London’s most sought-after locations. The building features private lateral apartments in a beautifully designed, mixed-use building on the site of the former Moxon Street carpark.Amenities include retail shops, restaurants, and community facilities. The basement offers residents with parking facilities. We worked with SEC to supply our TerraSmart Rail Paving System both internally and externally. On the external balconies of the project, we had to overcome wind-uplift, so we carried out a survey and used a fixing mechanism to secure the system against any adverse weather conditions. Wind uplift occurs when strong winds encounter a building and are forced up and over it. This accelerates the wind and creates a pocket of negative pressure above horizontal surfaces, such as balconies and terraces. This negative pressure exerts a suction effect on the surface, lifting paving and decking from the supporting substructure and causing significant damage. We have a dedicated article on this topic if you are interested in reading more about it.On the internal walkways of the building, our TerraSmart Rail was transported off-site where it was fixed to a steel frame. Our non-combustible joist-support RD-FR pedestals were spot-welded onto the main steel and the DS joists fixed to that. This was aligned with the overall height build-up for the 600x1200mm pavers on the internal gantries to be sitting onto. This is how the installers achieved the seamless integration between internal and external spaces of those areas.TerraSmart® Rail is made up of super-strong, 100% recyclable aluminium joists, which overlap to create a lattice framework, offering the maximum possible level of support for the paving surface. The system is fully non-combustible, achieving a Euroclass A1 fire rating. The finish of the internal areas at ground level, where no fire rating was required, featured 40mm granite pavers supported by our self-levelling adjustable RPA paving pedestals. The Challenge: Overcoming Roof Terrace Paving Issues at Meridian OneAt Meridian One, a prestigious residential development, the initial inspections of the first block revealed significant problems with the roof terrace paving. The site team identified multiple issues: many pavers were loose and unstable, with oversized gaps forming, even before occupancy. This was not only a safety concern but also a potential aesthetic and functional setback for the project.A detailed site visit by RYNO uncovered the root causes of these problems:Insufficient build-up:The 50mm concrete pavers used on the terraces, combined with a minimal build-up height of only 50mm in some areas, left no room for pedestals, leading to instability.Improper mortar use:Wet mortar had been applied in certain areas to make up for the lack of space and to accommodate drainage gullies. This led to further instability, as the mortar could not adequately support the pavers.Lack of perimeter spacersThe absence of spacers or spring clips around the paving edges allowed for creeping and the formation of gaps over time.Setting out issues:The layout of the pavers, particularly with the small 450x450mm format, resulted in awkward cuts at door thresholds, compounding the existing challenges. The Solution: A Comprehensive ApproachTo address the multifaceted challenges presented by the failing roof terrace paving, RYNO collaborated closely with the site team to develop a comprehensive solution. The core of the strategy involved implementing a robust pedestal system (TerraSmart® Pedestal Paving System IGNO: Fixed Head) combined with careful product selection and expert installation.Optimizing Build-Up Height:One of the primary concerns was the inadequate build-up height, which limited the available space for traditional paving support. To resolve this, a 20mm porcelain paver, Quadro Crema, was selected from RYNO’s extensive range. This choice satisfied both the functional and aesthetic requirements of the project. By reducing the paver thickness by 30mm, sufficient space was created for the installation of the RP-FR Non-Combustible Adjustable Paving Support Pedestal, starting at 25mm.Streamlining Installation:To streamline the installation process and minimize waste, a larger 600x600mm paver format was adopted. This decision significantly reduced the need for complex cutting around the terrace edges, thereby ensuring a cleaner, more efficient installation.Maintaining Stability:To prevent movement and maintain even spacing, the ESC Edge Spring Clip was incorporated into the system. This innovative product created a consistent gap between the paving and the wall, effectively countering outward pressure and ensuring proper drainage.Reinstallation and Quality Assurance:The existing problematic areas were carefully dismantled and reinstalled using the new system. The first block has been successfully completed, and the solution is currently being implemented across the remaining blocks.Key Learnings: The Importance of Early InvolvementBoth RYNO and the site team gained valuable insights from this experience. It became clear that the early involvement of a specialist manufacturer in the design phase is crucial to avoid time, cost, and hassle later in the project. This proactive approach ensures that potential issues are identified and addressed before they become major problems, leading to a smoother construction process and a higher quality end product.A Word from Vistry“I have to say that the products that they’ve recommended have been absolutely superb. We have used them across the whole project, and it’s been absolutely fabulous. Easy to manage my job. The tradesmen find it easy to use as well. The follow up visits from RYNO have been great. They’ve been very supportive, checking how we use the product, including advice, where we need it. So, keep up the good work!”Maria Butzki-Vogel, Site Manager – Vistry Partnerships

Thames City is a spectacular location and presence in Zone One of the River Thames. With some of the city’s most breathtaking views, especially for those not afraid of heights, this is a fresh district featuring three residential towers, a development of 12 buildings, beautiful apartments with private luxury amenities, high-end retail, and fine dining venues. The overall experience of this amazing project is made even more appealing thanks to its network of interconnecting parks, cosy green courtyards, and romantic city squares. This project was complex, involving both TerraSmart Rail Paving and TerraSmart Pedestal Paving Systems. Both these systems are designed for waterproofed substrates with TerraSmart Rail being the ultimate raised paving system, unbelievably solid thanks to its unique lattice framework.Due to the height of the tower, we worked closely with Midgard Design Services to develop and install an appropriate wind uplift mitigation solution to keep the project within budget. The TerraSmart Rail Paving System was weighted using ballast weights, and installed in the joist frame to mitigate uplift – it couldn’t be fixed into the structural slab due to it being an inverted roof. The pavers were then mechanically fixed to the joists using a wind uplift visual fixing, which clamps down the entire system. The TerraSmart Pedestal Paving System was mechanically fixed to the structural slab as there was no waterproofing membrane to penetrate underneath. The wind uplift mechanical fixing was screwed into the top of the pedestals to retain the concrete pavers and prevent any movement in strong winds. The installation of the systems was beautifully done by ANC Construction and the proof is in the photos you see on our website.

Postmark is a new residential development on the site of the former Royal Mail Mount Pleasant Mail Centre. In addition to being involved with the paved roof terraces within the new Pheonix Place development, Ryno worked directly with Broadway Malyan Architects to come up with a decking solution for the private balconies.System UsedTerraSmart® Aluminium was used across each of the balconies, with RD-FR adjustable decking pedestals and joist supporting over 2000m2 of sleek aluminium deck boards. Concrete slabs were laid between the substructure and deck boards to help counter wind uplift by increasing the overall dead load of the system.Testimonial “Approaching Ryno was a really easy thing to do…I felt confident using them.”– Gareth Rowe, Principal Landscape Architect, Broadway Malyan Want to hear more? Royal Free Hospital

Royal Free Hospital

RYNO

Part of the NHS Foundation Trust, The Royal Free Hospital was founded in 1828 as the Free Hospital to provide hospital care for the poor. A royal charter was granted by Queen Victoria in 1837 and for a very long time the Royal Free Hospital was the only hospital in London to offer clinical instruction to women. The hospital moved to its present location in the mid 1970s.The project to re-pave the hospital terrace started in January 2024 and completed in March. To ensure the upmost safety of all residents and users, we worked with the designers to help them select the best and highest performing solution for the project. We recommended our natural stone-look porcelain paving, Liddio, in its Sand Beige finish, on a TerraSmart Rail Paving System, which features a lattice framework that offers the maximum possible level of support and is, of course, Euroclass A1 fire-rated.The system was supplied to CWF Refurbishments Limited, who carried out the installation integrating it perfectly with the planters that add a touch of nature to the whole area for everyone to enjoy. The TerraSmart® Rail Paving System comes with our IGNO mark of assurance and offers the client the benefit of a 30-year warranty and 60-year design life (when installed as part of a complete system).CWF Refurbishments Limited have often commented how much they enjoy installing our TerraSmart Rail, and this project was no exception.

The Botanist - Newcastle

RYNO

System Used - TerraSmart pedestal IGNOThe Botanist is a botanical cocktail bar in the heart of Newcastle. Complete with a rooftop terrace bar, it entices revellers and partygoers with a welcoming and curated look. The natural materials of the terrace bar, mixed with the abundance of plants and natural light, transport customers to a chic, far-off watering hole. To complement and contrast the natural materials in the industrial setting, the bare materials, exposed brick, and stone effect tiles give a suggestive canvas to the biophilic decor. The design function of the terrace is as a high foot traffic area for social meetings. To fully support the paved area in these situations, we have seen a rise in users looking for simple pedestal systems that still provide a robust substructure at an economical rate. The pedestals have a wide base acting as a stable foundation and spacer tabs that equally space the pavers apart to create drainage channels.Sasso porcelain tiles could support the primary use of the space due to their inherent properties. These porcelain paving tiles are naturally non-porous, protecting the finish from staining. This non-porous property also makes the tiles resistant to bitumen and algae. The tile also features a low slip potential in both; wet and dry conditions. Having these properties within a hospitality environment can help make a safe and long-lasting flooring surface.TerraSmart Pedestal IGNO fits into this industrial, chic environment with its simple, robust pedestal structure and hard-wearing but stylish flooring finish, punctuating the space and tying the terrace together.

The Met Building

The Met Building

RYNO

This reimagined building in Fitzrovia, which puts people, wellness, and sustainability first, is another project we are particularly proud of and here’s why.The Met Building is 12 storeys high and one of a few such examples in London’s West End. Its design was inspired by one of New York’s landmark buildings, Lever House, one of Manhattan’s leading examples, which inspired decades of US corporate architecture. While the building’s interiors are crafted to appeal to corporates and creatives, the Tower has been designed to put people first, offering breathtaking views across London, and focusing on efficiency and productivity. The whole roof terrace of the Met Building’s Podium was built over the top of the existing roof and on a huge network of steels that are designed to direct the load away from the roof below. The system used on the roof terrace is our TerraSmart® Rail Paving System finished in our Porcelain Paving Range. This system features super-strong, 100% recyclable aluminium joists, overlapping to create a lattice framework that delivers maximum support for the porcelain paving above. In addition to complementing the overall aesthetics of the entire project, the system is fully non-combustible (Class A1 fire-rated) and, as such, in perfect harmony with the focus on the wellness and safety of all the building’s occupants. The porcelain pavers were inspired by nature and feature the performance of high-quality ceramics and environmentally conscious manufacturing that aligns with the project’s focus on sustainability. And to top it all, the entire solution installed is backed by our RYNO® IGNO® 30-year system warranty and 60-year design life.In total, the RYNO® TerraSmart® Rail Paving System was installed on 3 terraces at the Met Building, all built on the existing steel frame, and the planters that add to the outdoor experience have been integrated into the design and placed directly on top of the RYNO paving system. We are proud to have collaborated very closely with Vert Projects (the Main Contractor) and The Landscape Partnership (the Landscape Architect) in delivering this great design.

The Old War Office - Refurbishment

RYNO

The Old War Office is a magnificent refurbishment of Winston Churchill's headquarters during the World War II. The sensitive restoration of this Grade 2 historic building includes a 125-room world class Raffles Hotel and 85 luxury residences, along with restaurants, exclusive bars, a Spa and Wellness centre. Referred to as London’s anticipated destination, this architectural landmark opens its doors to the public in Summer 2023.RYNO’s involvement in the scheme included providing the paving and substructure to the Centre triangle Courtyard and the Penthouse Roof Terraces. The triangle Courtyard was finished with a RYNO Quadro porcelain range and supported on our TerraSmart Rail system. The system uses a double lattice structure to provide superior support to the pavers even around the complex curves of the planters on the courtyard and penthouse terraces. The design and detailing of the build-ups from concept to completion has been brilliant, fully complementing the building’s magnificent heritage and unique character.RYNO worked very closely with The Gardenists to ensure the rail layout and build-ups were designed to absolute perfection. Seeing is believing and as Calvin Dalrymple, Specification Manager at RYNO, testifies “to come to the site and see the results…, they really just speak for themselves. Knowing and understanding the coordination that's gone into this whole project and now to see it looking so fantastic has really been a huge reward.” Home to Winston Churchill and David Lloyd George, the Old War Office was designed in a trapezium shape to maximise the use of the land in Whitehall. Of the 25 million bricks that make up the building, the first was laid in 1901: the building was completed in 1906. For all Bond-fans out there, the building has featured in the background of many films: its first Bond-appearance was in 1983.
