An Orkney based seafood processing facility required durable, slip resistant floor coating systems for its production environments.Cooke Aquaculture Scotland is one of the leading producers of Scottish salmon, headquartered in Glasgow, with seawater farming operations in both Orkney and Shetland, and supplying national supermarket chains including Waitrose, Marks & Spencer and Tesco. Not only does the company pride itself on being the largest producer of organic Scottish salmon, Cooke Aquaculture has also established its own in-house feed division, ensuring their salmon are thriving, as well as ensuring their operations are sustainable from sea to delivery. While the strong tidal waters around the islands — the most northerly part of the UK — make for an ideal salmon farming location, transporting goods for the transformation of Cooke Aquaculture’s processing facility proved challenging. In spite of this, the installation team were able to complete the project, installing vebrocrete HF and vebrospeed Quartz over two phases across two areas of the production facility. With the production facility being subject to lots of water, both from the production processes, as well as the cleaning regimes, a suitably resistant and anti-slip finish was required to promote both safety and hygiene. vebrocrete HF, Vebro Polymers’ high performance seamless PU concrete, was chosen in Blue for the first large production area.  The system, which demonstrates excellent resistance to the effects of low temperatures, as well as hot water washdowns and associated thermal shock. The positively textured, seamless and hygienic floor coating is ideally suited to areas where a balance between intensive cleaning and slip resistance is required. For the second phase in another production area, vebrospeed Quartz was chosen to transform the floor under a fast turnaround. The attractive yet functional slip-resistant floor coating system based on fast-cure MMA (methyl methacrylate) technology, cures in as little as 60 minutes, meaning production can be back up and running very quickly.

Not only was the floor area damaged, dirty and drab, the risk of slips and trips across the facility was becoming problematic. After suitable mechanical preparation, repairs and infills, the substrate was coated with vebro EP OT Primer, a two-component epoxy priming product that is tolerant of residual oil contamination in concrete and cementitious floors, improving the adhesion of subsequent polymer floor systems.Chosen in RAL 7038 Agate Grey, Vebro Polymers’ high build coating system, vebrores EP HBC was able to deliver the perfect level of resistance to chemical attack from petrol, engine oils and other substances typically present in car workshop environments. The inclusion of anti-slip aggregates, encapsulated between the two coats of vebro EP Universal that make up the FeRFA Type 3 epoxy high-build floor system delivered additional slip resistance in critical foot-fall areas where rainwater may be present such as in front of the facility’s roller shutter doors, doorways and fire exits.

Client: South Western RailwayLocation: Clapham, Farnham, Fratton & Bournemouth, UKYear: 2023Project size: 25000 m²Vebro systems: vebrodeck ID, vebrodeck MMA EDFour of South Western Railway (SWR)’s major traincare depots, required over 25,000 square metres of liquid-applied seamless resin flooring, linemarking and hatching.SWR manages 187 stations alongside 10 traincare depots and stabling sidings located across London and south west England.Train depots are large facilities or yards where trains are stabled adjacent to the main lines. Trains are parked at depots overnight, where routine cleaning and maintenance takes place at what are often 24-hour operational facilities.Having had a previously poor experience with seamless resin coatings, which due to insufficient advice at specification stage had resulted in spectacular failure of the coating across many of the traincare depots, a diligent and open approach was required for the client to regain confidence in the material, application methods and resulting finish. At the time of approaching Vebro, there was no specification in mind, just the urgent need to refurbish the facilities by replacing the existing coatings.Several Vebro Polymers solutions were used across the four SWR sites, all of which were determined through a detailed site survey and evaluation process, in which the specific use of the area in question, service criteria, level of traffic and realistic life expectancy requirements of the floor within the parameters of budget were all consulted. All covered walkways, or ‘roads’ as they are referred to by depot staff that run between tracks, as well as the sunken floors located in inspection pits were specified with the vebrodeck ID system in RAL 7037 Dusty Grey.Inspection pit walls were twice coated with a water-based, gloss-finish, epoxy sealer in RAL 9010 Pure White.Semi-exposed ramps, which are located at the end of each of the sheds, were specified with the vebrodeck MMA ED system to provide additional safeguards against the elements and enhanced UV resistance as well as ensuring the material can be installed within tight weather windows. All linemarking, cross-hatching and demarcation was meticulously completed using the vebro EP Universal LM product – a solvent-free epoxy line-marking paint incorporating a thickening agent to prevent seepage under stencils and tape.

A hard-wearing durable levelling screed was required for a major redevelopment project at Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy, Fife. Originally opened in 1967, the facility is one of two main hospitals in the county, serving the town and mid-Fife area.  Extended in 2012, the hospital features an East, West and South and a main tower block, housing an accident and emergency department; maternity unit, an ENT unit, anaesthesia, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatric surgery, mental health services, infectious diseases and operating theatres.   When complete, the latest expansion to the Edinburgh hospital, representing a £33m investment that was approved in early 2021, will see the hospital gain 140 additional parking spaces in a new parking facility, as well as 3 operating theatres, a supporting inpatient ward and associated outpatient facilities.Vebro Polymers has provided v-Cem – a rapid-drying, high-strength, shrinkage-compensated screed that can be applied prior to the installation of commercial floor coverings, including carpet, titles, laminate or hard-wearing resin finishes.Laid at depths between 10.0 mm and 55.0 mm and beyond, v-Cem can be used to form screeds that are bonded, unbonded and floating screed applications, and is suited to use in both internal and external applications — ideal for the in-progress construction site of Victoria Hospital. The expansion of the hospital has included many phases and trades, each keen to maintain momentum to deliver the finished facility in good time. v-Cem will dry in as little as 4 days to receive resin finishes and other resilient floor coverings.

A global construction, energy and infrastructure organisation required a durable, chemical resistant floor coating solution with an anti-slip profile that would withstand the daily wear and tear of its internal vehicle repair and maintenance facility. VINCI Construction is part of VINCI Group, a multinational enterprise with operations in the energy, infrastructure and construction industries. Founded in 1899, the company now has a presence in over 120 countries with a global team of around 220,000 people. The Widnes facility is one of ten VINCI Construction UK locations and houses, among other facilities, a vehicle maintenance workshop where the company ensures their fleet of general and specialist vehicles. The industrial unit that houses the workshop previously had a concrete paving slab floor that proved to be uneven, unsafe, and difficult to maintain.  Not only did the new flooring solution need to address these concerns, it also needed to be both slip and chemical resistant as well as feature clearly marked automotive bays and provide enough durability to withstand frequent wheeled traffic as well as the impact of dropped tools and the weight of heavy equipment. Installed in a combination of RAL 7037 Dusty Grey and RAL 6024 Traffic Green, vebrores EP HBC was installed across the 332 m2 vehicle workshop, with the Traffic Green used to mark out the facility’s six automotive bays, before being outlined using vebrodeck PU Linemarker in Yellow. Prior to the installation of vebrores EP HBC SR – a system comprising an initial layer of vebro EP Primer followed two coats of vebro EP Universal with a broadcast of 52 mesh silica sand after the first coat for an anti-slip profile – the pre-existing concrete paving slabs were first coated with an epoxy DPM and a 20.0 mm screed to level the surface. vebrores EP HBC SR is a pigmented, solvent-free, slip-resistant high build epoxy floor coating system that is best suited to floors in medium duty processing areas where a textured, hard-wearing, chemical resistant finish is required. Available in a wide range of BS 4008 or RAL matched shades, the system is ideally suited to areas where there is a need for navigational demarcation and zoning.

Once cured, the material delivers a smooth, matt-finish surface that deadens sound transfer between floors by up to 4Db. Additional sound absorption can be achieved with a liquid membrane or rubber matting. The cementitious screed was reinforced using vebroscreed R&S (Repair & Strengthen) to improve the compressive strength of the sand / cement screed.vebroscreed R&S is a transparent, solvent free, epoxy material used to penetrate fine crack and fissures in cement-based semi-dry cementitious levelling screeds – injecting additional strength and reinforcement prior to the installation of floor coverings. One of the most interesting aspects of the install involved an intricate mandala formed in brass, which was positioned in the centre of the lower atrium floor, creating a stunning central focal point underfoot for visitors. The pigmented aliphatic comfort resin was used to infill each of the brass trim petals using a large syringe. Each petal was meticulously injected one by one, taking a whole day to complete.Resin Flooring Specialists (RFS) are one of the UK’s leading resin flooring installers, based in Kent, and working throughout England.RFS works alongside the UK’s largest construction companies, as well as working direct for clients across a wide range of industry sectors.Mindful of slip resistance, cleaning, performance and aesthetics, RFS pride themselves on being able to deliver the right solution for all resin flooring needs no matter what the environment.RFS are members of the Resin Flooring Association – FeRFA – and Construction Line as well as being an Alcumus Safe Contractor and CHAS Accredited contractor.
